The Future of Infographics

The Future of Infographics

future
As you're no doubt already aware, link bait is a fantastic strategy for boosting traffic and creating loads of organic, in-bound links. The infographic format in particular is one of the best ways to leverage the natural appeal of data visualization for SEO purposes. However, infographics may be facing some serious challenges in the near future that threaten their viability. As Google's own Matt Cutts recently hinted, the web's preeminent search engine giant may be looking to downgrade the value of links originating from infographics. The ramifications of such a move would be far-reaching for many marketers and SEO specialists across the web.
A Quick Link Bait Refresher Basically, link bait can be anything unique and eye-catching that gets users to click through to a target website. Early on, link bait was more often than not packaged as an article or blog post. Web content directories and article directories factored heavily into the overall SEO game plan. Provocative titles and posts geared towards spurring controversy were a popular strategy that was used successfully for many years. Nowadays, the almighty infographic is the newest tactic for link-baiting online. Alongside YouTube and Vimeo videos, infographics boast conversion rates that make them an attractive proposition for marketers.
The Pros & Cons of Infographics
The infographic has been an extremely successful tool for building links for years. They naturally attract viewers, they're easy to share and they're an inexpensive way to build links. Thanks to free cloud-based creation tools, infographics can be whipped up by anyone in a matter of minutes. On the other hand, they're not nearly as effective as they once were when it comes to SEO and boosting PageRank. Many infographics found online are of poor quality and feature inaccurate information. Furthermore, we've reached a point of "infographic overload" where the novelty has largely worn off.
The Future of Infographics for SEO
As a direct result of the Panda and Penguin updates, Google now focuses far more on the quality of content and links on a site. Building links purely from submitting infographics to as many blogs as possible isn't going to be a long-term strategy, but combining them with guest posts and custom summaries of your images most certainly will be. In short, don't just try to get your graphic posted – add extra value and reap the long-term benefits.
Augmented Reality & New(er) Media
The use of infographics as link bait isn't going out of style anytime soon. If marketers want to stand out in an increasingly crowded and competitive field, they'll need to be fairly creative when relying on them to build organic backlinks. Clickable infographics that incorporate media like video clips, interactive controls and augmented reality features are going to be big business in the next few years. As a result of the widespread adoption of mobile devices like the iPhone, augmented reality has gradually become more popular among everyday web users. Though link bait infographics featuring augmented realityhave yet to go mainstream, they're right around the corner.
Link Bait and the Big Picture
If current trends are any indication, link quality and authority will eventually dominate the future of SEO. Google's efforts to weed out sub-par link bait content by looking at social gravity rather than sheer social volume have been largely successful in recent years. If Oprah or Ashton Kutcher reference your link bait infographic, that's one thing. The vast majority of your Twitter followers re-tweeting your link bait probably won't have the same effect. Those factors aside, a quality piece of link bait that delivers value will typically overcome whatever built-in bias against infographics that Google might have.
The Wrap
Brilliant though they may be, folks like Google's Matt Cutts will never be able to completely stymie today's blogspammers and tomorrow's even more clever SEOs. Though infographics appear to be in the cross-hairs of Google and its competitors to some degree, that could ultimately be a good thing for those who know how to roll with the punches. Quality infographics are a blessing for the most part, and those who employ them judiciously don't have anything to worry about. In any event, the infographic format will continue to evolve and make for effective link bait for years to come.

LG Optimus Vu gets international launch, adds Tegra 3 quad-core

LG Optimus Vu gets international launch, adds Tegra 3 quad-core

When LG released their unique Optimus Vu 5-inch smartphone tablet hybrid earlier this year many wondered when we’d see it stateside. Today LG has confirmed the international launch of the device, and we are still expecting it to arrive in the US on Verizon Wireless with 4G LTE later this year. More details after the break.

The difference here is the US model will rock Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor and 4G LTE, while the international Vu headed to the rest of the world will be powered by NVIDIA’s always impressive quad-core Tegra 3 chip.

For those that don’t know, the LG Optimus Vu rocks an odd 4:3 aspect ratio 5-inch display with a 1024 x 768 resolution, 1GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, an 8 megapixel rear camera with 1.3 front and runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. We’ve seen it more than a few times and you can see our hands-on video in the timeline below from CTIA, and Mobile World Congress earlier this year.

Previous leaks confirm the Optimus Vu will hit Verizon Wireless in the US with 4G LTE in mid September, and now today LG’s confirmed the international launch will also roll out starting in September — so things are looking good for the Vu. Are you interested in an oddly shaped and sized 5-inch smartphone such as the Vu? Or would you rather get the Galaxy Note 2 that will be announced in a few weeks?

Business Process Modeling Just Got Easier With Creately

Business Process Modeling Just Got Easier With Creately

Business analyst tired of doing business process modeling using traditional software? Well we are here to change that. We came up with a set of tools that will make business process modeling faster, easier and fun. So how are we going to make it fast and easy? Below is a summary. Click on them to learn more on how they will speed up the process.

Usability Features to Draw Diagrams Faster

We are proud to call ourselves a productivity tool, which is why we have added some cool features to speed up your diagrams and save you time.  Features like 1-click create alone speed up the drawing 4 times compared to traditional diagram software. Whats more, check out our sticky containers which ‘understand’ how grouping in BPMN works like in Pools, Swimlanes and Processes.
BPMN notation can get complex. Off the 12 core shapes, there are so many various modifiers that you can apply making finding and drawing the diagram a headache.
We’ve simplified it with our awesome properties panel. So take a process and change the properties to make it have a different task type, make it loop etc.

Our text based KObjects makes modifying complex objects like choreography a walk in the park. Just double click on the object and follow the instructions to create detailed choreography objects with ease.

Separate Library to Reduce Clutter

Problem with most drawing software is that they have too much options and less drawing space. With our contextual tool bars you will only see the objects that are most relevant for you. After that it’s just a matter of dragging and dropping objects and drawing your diagram. The BPMN notation library has all the objects found in BPMN 2.0 approved by Object Management Group.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Back to School with Student Edition Bundle

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Back to School with Student Edition Bundle

So you are out looking for a new tablet device, but cannot really quite make up your mind? Well, you have basically two choices – one that hails from the fruity company known as Apple and runs on the iOS platform, making it the best selling tablet to date, while the other would be one that runs off the Android operating system from Google, and it comes in a myriad of form factors as well as manufacturers. Well, Samsung is back with yet another Android powered tablet, where it is known as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that targets students, logically calling it the Student Edition Bundle.
This special bundle would include a Keyboard Dock and an USB Adapter, without costing you any more money since it retails for $249.99 instead of the actual retail value of $349.99. This offer is good from tomorrow onwards, and will last for just a couple of weeks. The Special Edition that comes with a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 in a unique white color should be able to rack up those fingerprints quick and fast.
Students will definitely find their fair share of benefits from the bundle, where it will include a physical keyboard that can be hooked up to the tablet itself, while the USB adapter is able to support plugging in USB thumb drives in addition to peripherals such USB mice. On the software front, you get Polaris Office pre-loaded, making the Galaxy Tab 2 the perfect device for typing research reports – or perhaps, even creating presentations, right there and then on the spot. I do wonder whether this will affect Microsoft’s plan for their Surface tablets that run on Windows 8 as well as Windows RT, depending on the type of processor for that particular Surface tablet.
Travis Merrill, Director of Marketing, Galaxy Tab, Samsung Electronics America, said, “The education market is a significant priority for Samsung, and we are very pleased to deliver a bundle that is sure to be appealing to just about any student at a very competitive price point. A busy student can achieve a PC-like setup in the dorm room, yet still pop the Galaxy Tab 2 out of the dock and slip it into a pocket for usage while on the go. It truly is the smarter way to learn.”

Sony Reader PRS-T2 e-book reader

Sony Reader PRS-T2 e-book reader

Have you jumped aboard the e-book revolution? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you might want to check out the Sony Reader PRS-T2 e-book reader, which is the latest e-book reader device from the Japanese consumer electronics giant. Just what does the Sony Reader PRS-T2 offer right out of the box? Well, we are looking at additional features which allows it to manage content, delivering easy wireless access to public libraries as well as enhancing touch screen capability for a more immersive reading experience.
Basically, the Sony Reader PRS-T2 will not bog you down or cramp your traveling style, especially when it comes in a light and thin 6″ e-book reader form factor, sporting an enhanced, intuitive touch screen display that has been specially optimized for long-term reading while offering what Sony deems as “the most natural, immersive reading experience.” You will be able to select from white, red or matte black colors, where the new social features will be presented in a simplified and intuitively designed home screen.
As with all other e-book readers, one main area of concern would be the display quality – how does the Sony Reader PRS-T2 stack up? For starters, we are looking at a glare-free, E-Ink Pearl V220 touch screen display which has been specially enhanced for optimal long-term reading, sporting an intuitive touch, more paper-like page turns, in addition to improved continuous page turns and a smoother zoom in and out. Not only that, you get an improved default book layout so that it is easier to organize and look for your digital books.
A couple of English language and four translation dictionaries have been thrown into the mix as well, and with Wi-Fi connectivity turned off, Sony claims the Sony Reader PRS-T2 delivers up to two months of battery life. Storage space stands at 2GB, and all it takes is a single swipe of your finger to turn a page, while pinching your fingers will zoom in and out.
You can pick up the Sony Reader PRS-T2 for $129, while you can add on to that by picking up additional accessories such as a Cover and a Cover with light, where those will retail for approximately $35 and $50, respectively.

Announcing the 2012 SEO Industry Survey

Announcing the 2012 SEO Industry Survey

Back in March of this year, SEOmoz ran an industry survey that saw 6,491 respondents provide detailed answers to 53 unique questions. The survey formally ran from March 21st to May18th. From independent consultants to agency SEOs to in-house marketers, we got to see responses from a wide swath of the industry's demographics. Individuals from more than 100 countries contributed (as you can see below).

Country of Residence for SEO Survey Takers
You can now see the results of this survey, including some excellent analysis by our very own Dr. Peter J. Meyers on the site.
Survey Screenshot
Note that on the right-hand column of the survey, you'll see each of the individual sections Pete's analyzed in the formal survey results. You can also find the complete results as well as those from 2010, which shows some fascinating differences.
But, Pete's not the only one who did some data analysis on the survey results :-) In preparation for mywebinar with Dharmesh from Hubspot, I looked at something I've been curious about for a while - the differences in salary for in-house vs. agency/consultant marketers. I filtered to just the US/UK/Canada/Australia/NZ for these results, and found it fascinating:
In-house vs. agency salaries
The common wisdom is that marketers at agencies have lower compensation, but a greater ability to build their portfolio and skills for the future. I can't speak to the latter assumption, but I can say that the former seems accurate, at least from this data.
Two final notes - the first, please be aware that SEOmoz is not a professional surveying firm, so our methodology and question formats are likely inferior to those run by formal statisticians. And second, I'd like to give huge thanks to all the organizations who helped support the industry survey, includingOutspoken MediaSearch Engine LandDistilledHubspotSearch Engine JournalTechipedia,AimClearBlueglassMarketing Pilgrim, and Search Engine Watch.
Thanks to Supporting Organizations
Buried in the data are treasure troves of fascinating information, and I encourage anyone with curiousity to dig around in the full stats and report on any interesting findings. This data is welcome to be used by anyone for private or public consumption (so yes, you can include it in your internal reporting/slide decks if you'd like), but of course, we'd appreciate source citation.

Panasonic Reveals World’s* First High Brightness Compact LCD Projector With Digital..

Panasonic Reveals World’s* First High Brightness Compact LCD Projector With Digital..

BRACKNELL, UK, 20 AUGUST 2012 Panasonic Systems Communications Company Europe (PSCEU), today announced a new Digital Link compatible projector, the PT-VW431D, that has high brightness of 4,300 lumens and WXGA resolution all in a compact body. The PT-VW431D is designed to bring a whole new experience of long distance, digital connection with extremely clean wiring. Education and corporate users who had long lengths of multiple wires running to the projector will enjoy the benefit of Digital Link’s efficiency and saved cabling cost.

Panasonic’s Digital Link, based on Valens HDBaseT™ technology, is built into the PT-VW431D for easy and simple digital connection of HDMI, other full uncompressed HD videos, audio and control commands all via a single Cat5e/6 LAN cable. These signals can be transmitted up to 100m (328ft). Used together with the new ET-YFB100 switcher box, or other switchers with HDBaseT™ chipset, the installation of this projector is easier than ever without any need for external receivers.

Panasonic has partnered with industry leading manufacturers of HDBaseT solutions including Crestron, Extron, and AMX, to insure the interoperability of PT-VW431D with Crestron’s DigitalMedia 8G+™ compatible switchers, Extron’s XTP Systems and AMX’s Enova DVX and DGX Digital Media Switchers.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve the user experience with our projectors. With rapid adoption of HDBaseT embedded products across the industry within a variety of audio/video (AV) markets, all with the end purpose of providing solutions for these common installation challenges, we saw a need to support the technology with our projectors,” said Hartmut Kulessa, Marketing Manager Projectors, PSCEU. Hartmut continues: “By providing the first projector launch with Digital Link compatibility, we are leading the market into a new era of simple, yet dependable connectivity.”

“The adoption of HDBaseT technology by industry leaders such as Panasonic confirms HDBaseT’s status as the de facto standard for digital connectivity in the industry,” said Dror Jerushalmi, CEO and co-founder, Valens Semiconductor. “Device adoption in the professional AV space marks a significant step in HDBaseT’s migration to the consumer electronics market, concludes Dror.”

The PT-VW431D offers high brightness of 4,300 lumens and a high contrast ratio of 3,500:1. This compact projector is equipped with a pleated micro cut filter which maximises its replacement cycle up to 4,000 hours as it helps to reduce maintenance time and cost. In addition, the PT-VW431D ensures image quality even in the environment where rooms are brightly lit, thanks to Panasonic’s Daylight View Basic technology. The built-in sensor in the projector detects and measures the amount of ambient light and the Daylight View function adjusts the image according to the light condition.

The PT-VW431D offers installation flexibility for portable and ceiling mounted applications. The 1.6x manual zoom lens allows wide range projection from 2.5m (8.2ft) to 4.1m (13.5ft). Furthermore, the PT-VW431D features vertical lens shift function, which moves the image position +48% vertically without distorting the image quality.

SERP Crowding & Shrinkage: It's Not Your Imagination

SERP Crowding & Shrinkage: It's Not Your Imagination

Back in June, I wrote about what I called the “Bigfoot” Update, a major Google ranking fluctuation that seemed to be tied to SERP crowding. Put simply, fewer domains were getting more real estate in the Top 10. Since June, this trend only seems to be continuing. This is a graph of domain diversity from April 4, 2012 through last Thursday (August 16):
Domain Diversity (4/4 - 8/16)
The percentage represents the density of unique subdomains across the entire data set (Top 10 rankings for 1,000 keywords) – the lower the domain diversity, the more crowding in the SERPs. The large drops are: (1) the original Penguin update and (2) the “Bigfoot” update. Crowding continued to worsen until (3), when a slight improvement occurred around 8/14.

The Incredible Shrinking SERPs

As I was digging into (3), I noticed that something else happened around that same time. There was a burst of chatter that people were seeing only 7 results on some SERPs. One of the benefits of theMozcast data set is that I can go back and run new stats over historical Page 1 rankings. So, I set out to determine if this 7-result phenomenon was real, and if so, if it was new. This is a graph of Top 10 SERPs with less than 10 results since April 4:
SERPS with <10 Results
While, historically, it seems there have been some SERPs with less than 10 results for a while, they ranged from 1-4% of the data set. In just two days, from about August 12-14, that number jumped toover 18%. Mozcast shows Page 1 SERPs with between 7-10 results, but almost the entire spike occurred in the 7-result pages. This is a graph of just the 7-result data:
SERPs with Exactly 7 Results
SERPs with 7 results were an anomaly prior to 8/13, with the system tracking a maximum of one (0. 1%) on any given day. On 8/13, that number jumped to 10.7% and then, the following day, to 18.3%. Almost one-fifth of SERPs tracked by our data now have 7 results.

“George Is Getting Upset!”

Nobody likes shrinkage, and we naturally get upset when someone messes around with our familiar, 10-result page. So, what’s happening here? Here’s a sample SERP, for “pc tools”, with numbered results (1-7):
7-result SERP ("PC Tools")
You’ll notice two things right away: (1) “PC Tools” is a brand, and (2) the #1 result has expanded site-links. Not every SERP affected appears to be branded, though – a search for “krill” (the #1 result is a Wikipedia entry for the crustacean) also returns 7 results, for example.
To maintain the integrity of the Mozcast crawl, I can’t do a public data dump of all of the affected keywords we measured, but spot-checking them reveals expanded site-links in almost all observable cases. While not all keyword phrases were branded, site-links and branded queries are naturally correlated.

“No! Not Six! I Said Seven!”

Sorry, I just wanted an excuse to use this movie clip. While the vast majority of the shrunken SERPs have 7 results, a couple of 6-result pages snuck into the mix. This is a screenshot from a Google result for “pictures of cats”:
6-result SERP ("pictures of cats")
Here, the standard, organic results are preceded by a mega-block of image results. Like the expanded site-links, I can only guess that these are being treated as multiple pieces of SERP “real estate”. In every case, the first result or result-block appears to be counting as more than one position.

What’s the Crowding Connection?

It’s tough to say if the slight decrease in crowding (increase in diversity) is directly related to the explosion in 7-result SERPs. My best guess is that, since many of the 7-result SERPs are branded and branded results seem to have more crowding (anecdotally, at least), cutting them short of a full 10 improved overall diversity slightly. In other words if a 10-result SERP was crowded and three got lopped off, then the remaining 10-result SERPs are counting more and pushing diversity back up a bit. It’s impossible to say if this was intentional or just a side-effect.

Why Was “Flux” Relatively Normal?

If you follow the Google weather on Mozcast, you may be wondering why temperatures were just slightly above average on the two days when SERP shrinkage rolled out. Digging into the data, it appears that the baseline flux for those two days was relatively low. Without the 7-result shift, temperatures on 8/13 would've been closer to 62°F. Combined with the two-day roll-out (split almost evenly across the two days), the introduction of the 7-result pages snuck just below the radar. It's hard to say whether the two-day roll-out was intentional or simply an artifact of our 24-hour data collection.
What Can You Do About It?
In a word: nothing. This isn't an SEO-related change, where an on-page or link-profile tweak might change your SERP back to 10 results. This is an algorithmic volume knob Google can turn and we can't, right or wrong. My best advice is to spot-check the SERPs for your main keywords. Don't just rely on rank-tracking tools - they may tell you that you're in the #8-#10 spot, but they won't tell you whether your SERP cut off after #7. If you're sitting on a lot of #8 keywords, you may find yourself suddenly on Page 2. If that's the case, it could be worth the effort to get back up into the Top 7, especially if the cost of getting from #8 to #7 is relatively low. Of course, this is a recent development, and it's likely Google is testing the waters (and could make a course-correction). My best advice is to pay attention - as part of your regular reporting process, make sure you look at SERPs in the wild, and see what you're up against.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon review: the definitive Ultrabook for pros

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon review: the definitive Ultrabook for pros

DNP Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon review dark and angular meets thin and light
The storied ThinkPad line has just turned 20 and, over all those years, the brand has established itself as something that (mostly) successfully straddles the line between boring corporate accessory and classy consumer choice. Stoic is an apt term for the machines and, through those two decades, they've only gotten better and better -- well, most of the time, anyway.
Welcome, then, to what is the latest and, therefore, what should be the best: the $1,499 ThinkPad X1 Carbon. It's an evolution of last year's X1, thinner and lighter than that pre-Ultrabook despite having a larger display. The Carbon moniker here not only describes this machine's matte black exterior but also applies to the woven and resin-impregnated composite structure within, delivering a rare mix of light weight, svelte dimensions and durable construction. It's a wonder to behold but can it improve on theprevious ThinkPad X1's shortcomings? There's only one way to find out.

Bell Canada HD
Canadians who need a new LTE handset, and can make things last, can now get Motorola's Atrix HD LTE from Bell for just $50. The catch? You'll be yoking yourself in matrimony to a whopping 36-month deal, a period longer than most celebrity marriages. The 4.5-inch handset is clad in a Kevlar body and comes with Ice Cream Sandwich, so as long as you're not in the habit of flinging phones against walls, you should be okay.

ROCCAT Powergrid Android version in the pipeline, we go handson with the keyboardaugmenting app video
ROCCAT's plans to fight back against Razer's glowing customizable macro-keys and touchscreens are nearing the finish line. Here at Gamescom, the mouse and keyboard maker's Power-Grip app was at a nearly-finished stage on the iPhone. Better still, the Android version was close behind it -- although it was slightly less polished. The idea is to add a wealth of touchscreen widgets and quickly viewable data to your smartphone, sidestepping the need for pricier hardware solutions. That said, there are plans forROCCAT to create some happy medium between the rogue smartphone interface and its more standard keyboard, with ideas gravitating towards a docking space for your phone built into the keyboard. We took the slightly more temperamental Android version for a spin on ROCCAT CEO Rene Korte's Galaxy S III -- check what the app's likely to offer on its December release in our hands-on after the break.

Nokia patents haptic system to simulate linear motion and assist with navigational route guidance
The crew in Espoo have just added a new patent to the arsenal that promises to add a refined level of haptic feedback to the user experience. Fundamental to Nokia's plan is a matrix of independent haptic devices that remain stationary, but combine to simulate the sensation of linear and circular movement. Not only could the enhanced feedback bring a new level of interaction to the software interface,

but Nokia also hypothesizes that the system will be useful for providing navigational route guidance -- say, without the need for visual or auditory feedback. Given the company's other research in the field of haptic systems, it seems Nokia's future may be full of good vibrations, indeed.
