Apple and Samsung both infringe on each other’s patents, Korean court rules

Apple and Samsung both infringe on each other’s patents, Korean court rules

Apple and Samsung may currently be engaged in a high-profile patent suit here in the States, but the companies are actually going to war all around the world. A similar case in South Korea has just wrapped up, with a Seoul court ruling that Apple and Samsung have infringed on each other’s patents. What’s worse is that Apple and Samsung are now banned from selling a variety of devices in South Korea, including the Galaxy S II for Samsung and the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 for Apple.

Much like the court case here in the US, Apple accused Samsung of copying the design of the iPhone with devices of its own. While the court ruled that Samsung didn’t infringe on the design of the iPhone, it did find that Samsung and Apple are guilty of infringing on each other’s patents. Apple, the court rules, has infringed on one of Samsung’s patents, while Samsung has infringed on two of Apple’s. As a result, Samsung must pay a fine of 40 million won (around $35,300, or $17,650 for each patent), while Apple will be forced to pay 25 million won ($22,000) for its infringement. Reuters reports that the fines are so small because of the size of the South Korean market.
The Judge deciding the case said that consumers are unlikely to confuse devices from the two companies, since both company’s logos are printed on the back of the phones. The Judge also cited the differences in applications and operating systems as reasons why consumers probably wouldn’t get confused, and recognized Samsung’s attempt at differentiating its products from Apple’s, despite the fact that making significant changes to touchscreen phones isn’t exactly the easiest thing to do.
One has to wonder if the case here will go the same direction. There are similarities between the iPhone and some Samsung devices, yes, but you would be hard pressed to find a smartphone that was truly unique from every other device out there. In any case, the jury began deliberation on Wednesday, so it shouldn’t be too much longer before we have a winner in the case. Then again, Apple and Samsung both presented a lot of evidence throughout the trial, so we might be waiting a while. Stay tuned.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean leaks for T-Mobile Galaxy S III

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean leaks for T-Mobile Galaxy S III

Earlier this week we saw our first official leak of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the popular Galaxy S III smartphone. The only problem was the leak was only for the international version, not for those here in the US. Today however the T-Mobile Galaxy S III has just received its own little box of Jelly Beans.

We’ve heard multiple rumors and talk that Samsung has been diligently working on an update for their new flagship smartphone, and that we very well could see Jelly Bean officially roll out by the end of this month. That is looking quite likely now that we are seeing multiple different models all get fairly stable leaks.
Thanks to XDA Developers the T-Mobile Galaxy S III Jelly Bean leak is available as we speak. So far it looks almost exactly like the earlier international leak, and we aren’t seeing much for changes. Samsung managed to keep this Galaxy launch all the same across all carriers so hopefully they’ll be able to roll out multiple updates with ease.

We still aren’t sure if carriers will approve and update their versions as fast as the international model, but as of right now it’s looking quite possible. In order to flash the leak you’ll be required to be running the latest official stock update from T-Mobile, and flash it in recovery. We are hearing some were able to keep root, but that is unconfirmed. As usual flash at your own risk. Enjoy!

Google employee Punit Soni named Motorola VP of Product

Google employee Punit Soni named Motorola VP of Product

Google is slowly but surely making some changes and transitions over at Motorola Mobility. After snatching the company and all their patents up last year for about $12.5 billion we’ve been waiting to see some actual results from the purchase. Back in May the deal was finalized and they replaced the CEO with their own Dennis Woodside, and today another Googler is taking on VP of Products.

A Googler by the name of Punit Soni is the new man in charge over at team Moto. He’s been known for playing a huge roll in Android as a whole, as well as the Google Apps ecosystem — so we are extremely excited to see him helping Motorola get back to the top. This is a good sign of things to come.
The folks at The Verge spotted a change in his LinkedIn account where he changed his status to the new role of VP. Soni himself briefly explained what we can expect his roles and responsibilities to be — and here’s what he had to say:
Responsible for all things software at Motorola Mobility
I am a general manager responsible for all aspects of the product development including crafting strategy, building teams and executing to go to market.
The fact that Soni has worked closely with Google and some of their Android apps gives us hope that he can continue to help Motorola with their own unique version of Android. Their user interface changes while improving, are still certainly not my favorite. Hopefully Punit Soni can bring some needed improvements to Motorola Mobility as a whole, as well as all their upcoming products. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a Motorola DROID Nexus.

Kate Upton helps Samsung launch the Galaxy Note 10.1

Kate Upton helps Samsung launch the Galaxy Note 10.1

I never thought I’d be writing about the always gorgeous Kate Upton or Irina Shayk when it came to Android news, but thanks to Samsung I get to do exactly that. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Covergirls, and widely known Supermodel were grabbed by Samsung to help them launch and promote their new Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet — and we have pictures.

I thought about mentioning this without posting the images, but that would just be rude. Thanks to Zimbio.comwe have not one, but a full gallery for your viewing pleasure. Now lets talk about the tablet, because well, we should. Samsung recently released their all new Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet with the included stylus S-Pen. I’m sure you know plenty about it already but if not, take a peek below.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 is their new flagship tablet. Consisting of a quad-core 1.4 GHz Exynos processor, 2GB of RAM, and a brilliant 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 resolution display. The big deal here is the S-Pen stylus for serious content creation. Draw artwork, take notes, play Draw Something, and many other uses. It’s readily available right this minute but if you’re not sold take a glance at our Galaxy Note 10.1 Review. Now for more pictures of Kate Upton hanging out with the Galaxy Note!
This was actually back on August 15th when Samsung held their event in NYC for the new tablet, and now I’m wishing I had gone. While browsing a few other photos of the sexy Kate Upton, we couldn’t help but notice she was rocking not a Galaxy S III, but the iPhone instead thanks to a picture by KnottyCelebs. You think Samsung would equip these stars with their latest smartphone — but I guess not. It’s okay though, I won’t hold it against her.
While this alone probably won’t persuade you to purchase the new Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet it is an awesome device worth taking a second look at. Especially for those business professionals. I hope Samsung keeps up the trend because it sure makes writing a lot easier when it’s a Supermodel. Now I can’t stop thinking about that Kate Upton Carl’s Jr Commercial. Who’s interested in the Galaxy Note 10? Or did you just come here for Kate Upton?

HTC Desire X pictured in the wild – full details leaked

HTC Desire X pictured in the wild – full details leaked

Late last week some rumors started circulating about a device called the HTC Proto, that however is actually a device that has already been released. Today though we’ve got some clarification, as the device in question is actually the all new HTC Desire X and we have all the details. Check out the images and spec sheet below.

The Desire X certainly won’t be HTC’s best device, but this budget friendly phone has some decent qualities that might make it worth your dollar. As you can see below, specs include a 4.0-inch WVGA with a lowly 480 x 800 resolution display, an unknown (likely Qualcomm) 1.0 GHz dual-core processor, 768MB of RAM, 4GB internal storage, and all this in a sleek and lightweight package sitting at 114g. Sized at 118.5 x 62.3 x 9.3 mm.
The spec sheet confirms we’ll have Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense UI 4.1, so that is a good sign considering only the “One” devices have officially received the new Sense UI while older phones get 3.6 instead. Sitting next to the HTC One X the device looks quite small, but still manages a decent 4-inch screen. We just wish the resolution wasn’t so low.
Given the specs this will surely be a very budget friendly smartphone from HTC. It looks to possibly be replacing the HTC One V, but we won’t know until HTC confirms everything. As you can clearly see HTC is still rocking the Beats Audio branding, and according to PocketNow this device will come in white and blue color options. Hopefully we see more than just this phone at IFA this week from HTC and I’m hoping their “phablet” makes an appearance. Stay tuned!

Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE image and full spec list surface

Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE image and full spec list surface

We’ve been chasing details on the Motorola XT907 for a couple of months now, but now we have a substantial amount of information on the phone. Engadget has posted a full list of specs and an image of the elusive device, saying that it will be dubbed the Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE when it launches at Verizon. As you can see from the image below, the phone looks pretty sleek, but will it have the power under the hood to deliver the goods? Read on to find out.

The RAZR M will come equipped with a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED screen, and will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. It only comes with room for 8GB of internal storage, but you can expand on that through the use of MicroSD cards – the RAZR M’s MicroSD slot supports up to 32GB. There’s also 1GB of RAM on board, and judging from the pictures, it would seem that the RAZR M lacks any kind of actual face buttons, with Motorola instead opting to go for touch buttons.
A dual-core MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor will be running the show, with an 8-megapixel camera being placed on the back of the device and a 3-megapixel one on the front. That rear-facing camera is capable of recording in 720p. We’ve got NFC and (obviously) 4G LTE capabilities with this bad boy, and the front is outfitted with Gorilla Glass 2 while the phone sports the same Kevlar backing that is becoming more and more common on Motorola phones.
So, while we won’t see it burning up benchmarks, it does seem like a solid handset. It’s pretty sleek looking too, which is always nice. There aren’t any release or pricing details for this phone yet, but we’ve heard in the pastthat it will be arriving at Verizon for $149 (with a two-year contract) sometime next month. Stay tuned, because we’ll have more information on the RAZR M once Motorola and Verizon dish it out.
