Sony announces NSZ-GS7 Internet Player with Google TV

Sony announces NSZ-GS7 Internet Player with Google TV

Sony has just announced the realization of a dream, so to speak, which is to bring Google TV to the masses, packaging it in a piece of hardware that will definitely stop you in your tracks when you take a closer look at it. Basically, this is Google TV presented in the form of the Sony NSZ-GS7, which was first introduced in Las Vegas at CES 2012 earlier this January, but we are pleased to know that Sony’s team has finally made it possible for the common man to place a pre-order for this device from June 25th onwards – that would be today. It will hit retailers around in the US when July 22nd rolls around the calendar, citing a $199 price point.
Phil Molyneux, president and chief operating officer of Sony Electronics, said, “Expanding the reach and interoperability of the powerful Android platform with Sony’s smartphones, tablets and renowned Audio & Video products, we are proud to continue our relationship with Google through the introduction of the new Google TV set-top-box. Entertainment content is available through so many channels and sites, and Google TV helps consumers easily find what they want to watch, listen to or play using familiar search engine technology, enhancing the viewer experience. TV will never be the same.”
The Sony NSZ-GS7 Internet Player will not be Sony’s only new announcement, as the Japanese company has also their latest Internet Blu-ray Disc player in tow with Google TV, calling it the NSZ-GP9 if model numbers are your cup of tea. It will hit retailers’ store shelves in time for the holiday season, citing a $299 price point to boot. The Sony NSZ-GP9 player is said to boast of Sony’s proven Blu-ray Disc technology, where it will also work in tandem with the robust Google TV platform.
So what kind of clout will the Sony NSZ-GS7 Internet Player with Google TV carry when it is introduced? For one, Sony will bear the hallmark of being the first manufacturer to launch Google TV products outside of the US, kicking off with the UK in July, with Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Brazil, and Mexico to follow afterwards. As for the Sony NSZ-GP9 Blu-ray Disc player with Google TV, it will of course arrive Stateside first, followed by Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Netherlands.

Mini iPad? Isn’t that just a Maxi iPod?

Mini iPad? Isn’t that just a Maxi iPod?

If it were not for Apple products I’m not sure the technology rumor mill would be quite as much fun as it is now. There is always some hush-hush secret project going on, with an undisclosed release date, that wouldn’t bother me so much if I hadn’t just purchased the latest gizmo only to find out that there was something neater, cooler, smaller, faster or, with better battery life just around the corner. So let me tell you what might be, in case it saves you from some future disappointment.
Have you heard about the Apple iPad Mini? I hadn’t, so I did a little research, and this is what I came up with… The iPad Mini is most likely a reality and already set to go into production, it will have a smaller-than-8-inch screen, ditching  the retina display in favor of oxide TFT technology, have a differently positioned camera, and will be offered at a lower price point than the regular iPad we all know, and love. (or despise in favor of Android devices, but that’s a whole other post)
It seems like all the excitement will start this fall, maybe as early as September, when Apple may begin rolling out not only the brand new, diminutive iPad, but the new iPhone (4G/LTE?) as well. I wish I had more details to give you. Oh wait! Sources are also leaning towards a $250 to $300 price point. Come on guys, what do you know? and will you be standing in line for the baby iPad?

iPhone 360 Degree Panoramic Video L

iPhone 360 Degree Panoramic Video Lens

When it comes to the iPhone’s camera, it has long reigned as the undisputed champion of cameras found in smartphones, although new challengers such as the Galaxy S3 as well as the slightly older HTC One series are worth their salt as well, especially with the latter being able to capture stills while you are recording a video simultaneously. Well, what are some of the ways where you are able to extend the functionality of an iPhone camera? Why, throwing in its fair share of accessories, that’s what! With the$79.95 iPhone 360 Degree Panoramic Video Lens, it pretty much says it all.
You will soon be able to shoot some great looking panoramic shots and video, thanks to a similar technology that is found in U.S. Army surveillance cameras. This particular lens relies on a curved mirror which is capable of gathering light from all directions, where it will reflect it back into the iPhone’s camera so that video recording in all directions can happen simultaneously without the need for processor intensive image stitching afterwards. Each purchase comes with a free app that will automatically calibrate the focus, adjust the exposure, and enable you to pan and tilt the viewing perspective up to 360º on the horizontal plane and up to 80º on the vertical plane. I expect to see more creative shots on your Facebook account after getting this!

Is iPad “cooler” than Galaxy?

Is iPad “cooler” than Galaxy?

Apple’s quest to be the coolest gadget received a boost…of sorts…yesterday. Apple had previously filed suit in London High Court claiming Samsung’s Galaxy tablet infringed on their intellectual property. But yesterday a judge ruled that the Galaxy did not infringe. His conclusion about the Galaxy? “They are not as cool,”and Galaxy tablets “do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design,” stated Judge Colin Birss in his ruling.
So do you agree with the judge? Is the Apple iPad truly “cooler” than the Samsung Galaxy? Vote and post your comments as to why you prefer the iPad or Galaxy.

Waterproof Bolt Down Safe

Waterproof Bolt Down Safe

Have you ever watched James Cameron’s Titanic? At the beginning of the story, the dive expedition saw some members of the team check out a safe that was still stuck under tons of pressure per square inch, only to retrive it and find out a drawing of Rose by a particular Jack Dawson. Well, I suppose if the safe was the $199.95 Waterproof Bolt Down Safe, it would not have any water rush inside to spoil the contents of the safe. Touted to be 100% waterproof even when fully submerged, it will bolt to a floor so that you can make sure your sensitive belongings remain in your safekeeping according to the best of your ability.
Just in case there is a flood, the perfect airtight seal will prevent all water seepage, while ensuring it remains buoyant when not bolted down just in case there is a flood. It is also insulated with resin and cement, so that it can handle a 1,700º F fire for up to an hour in tests performed by and independent laboratory. Other features of the safe include 0.94″ cu. of storage which will also boast of an adjustable-height shelf, an integrated key rack, and a pocket on the interior of the door which is perfect for passports, birth certificates, titles, or deeds.

iGills SE-35 offers more than just waterproof protection

iGills SE-35 offers more than just waterproof protection

So you love going snorkeling, and while you are at it, why not snap some photos? After all, it makes perfect sense to capture the overall feeling of wonder whenever you are swimming a few feet below the sea’s surface, not to mention having that surreal environment which is a whole lot calmer (in most cases, unless you jump right into the middle of a feeding frenzy) than what we get up here on solid ground. For those who are wondering whether to purchase a waterproof case for your digital camera, you might want to consider an alternative – the iGills SE-35, where the name itself gives the game away.
Basically, the iGills SE-35’s primary function would be to make sure your iPhone remains nice and dry despite you being underwater, but it will also do far more than that. In fact, the iGills SE-35 is said to be able to transform your iPhone into a fully-featured dive computer. This is a waterproof scuba diving case that works great in protecting the iPhone nice and dry down to depths of 130 feet (40 meters), and it also makes life easy for you to use underwater thanks to half a dozen buttons that have been integrated into the design.
Not only that, you will be able to retain access to your iPhone’s camera to shoot underwater images, while the iGills SE-35 will also come with a complementary app that paves the way for you to take advantage of its navigation tools. Are your surroundings too dark? Not to worry, there is also a built-in torch to help you out here, with of course, an automatic dive log to boot.
Polycarbonate is the material of choice for the iGills SE-35’s housing, where it is said to feature similar material used to manufacture bulletproof glass, and it will place nice with all iPhones except for the original iPhone from 2007 and the iPhone 3G. Basically, anything from the iPhone 3GS and newer will work, although I do think that it will not work with the next generation iPhone. You cannot receive data transmission or make calls when underwater though, but that should not be an issue. The iGills SE-35 has a pre-order price of $329.99 a pop.

Tetris Alarm Clock

Tetris Alarm Clock

“I say, mate, isn’t it time for a game of Tetris?” That would be a great line to say out loud, assuming your living room or office cubicle (during your lunch break, of course, otherwise I am quite sure those productivity-driven bosses and upper levels of management will not be too amused) carries this cute looking £24.99 Tetris Alarm Clock. Yes sir, the name of the Tetris Alarm Clock says it all, but do give me the pleasure and opportunity to elaborate further on just what this modern day timepiece with a foot that is stuck in the past is capable of.
Ever since Tetris rolled out into the world of video games all the way back in 1984, the world has gone through different phases and genres of gaming, but the classic Tetris (with all the different variants up till today) has stood against the test of time. Well, the Tetris Alarm Clock pays homage to this particular classic title, functioning as a fully operational alarm clock at the same time. It comes with Tetrimino-shaped buttons, 12/24 hour settings, snooze, backlight and the official Tetris theme music as an alarm. Numbers on the clock face comprise of digital falling bricks, where each one will rotate into place as the time moves from minute to minute. Neat, huh?

Samsung NX1000 SMART Compact System Camera

Samsung NX1000 SMART Compact System Camera

When it comes to the world of digital cameras, I would say that it can be quite safe to assume that many folks do lean more towards the Canon and Nikon persuasion when it comes to the masses. Obviously, there will also be others who would settle for nothing but the very best, and these are the people whom you will find use Leica systems – which some say is the Rolls Royce of the camera world. How about Samsung? Well, the South Korean company seems more suitable to cater to the entry level and prosumer crowd, and they do not disappoint in this aspect with their latest shooter, the Samsung NX1000 SMART compact system camera.
Just what makes it so “smart”? Apart from laying claim to delivering professional-like image quality and integrated Wi-Fi which delivers instant photo sharing capability, it is also adequately sized for you to carry it with you wherever you go without worrying too much about the bulk or weight.
It is interesting to note that the Wi-Fi connection can be accessed with a touch of a button, which is a good idea since that would translate into power conservation – perfect if you have a full day of photoshoots ahead of you. A dedicated Smart Link Hot Key that is located on the top of the Samsung NX1000 would also make sharing and storing photos a snap.
What kind of color options does the Samsung NX1000 come in? Unlike Batman who wants everything in black, here we are with the Samsung NX1000 coming in not only black, but you can also opt for its polar opposite, white, and if you happen to pick up the Samsung NX1000 for a girlfriend, wife or daughter, then you would be thrilled to know that it comes in pink as well.
The Samsung NX1000 will be accompanied by an all-purpose 20-50mm lens and external flash, a large, bright 3.0-inch LCD screen for composing images, 1080p HD video capture capability, and technologies such as Smart Auto 2.0 to bring out the inner photographer in all users. With a multi-billion dollar event and the eyes of the world on the results you know that groundbreaking technologies are involved in the Summer Olympics. Competitions can come down to the thousandth of a point or second. And preserving the integrity of the games through accurate results is a critical.

Angry Birds can be played sans touching your display

Angry Birds can be played sans touching your display

I would assume that even Rovio themselves did not realize what a huge hit they have on their hands when they first released Angry Birds onto the market. Just like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, there is no stopping them at all once they have gone off the starting blocks. Angry Birds has certainly grown to be a powerful franchise du jour, although there is no telling whether Angry Birds will have the same kind of staying power as that of Nintendo’s Mario and Zelda which has transcended generations past.
It is safe to say that Angry Birds has appeared on just about all mobile platforms – BlackBerry, iOS, Android and Windows Phone, in no particular order of importance or paying attention to the timeline of said releases. The thing is, the Angry Birds franchise has even grown from being just limited to games, touching industries like theme parks and the more-or-less guaranteed money spinner, merchandise. This time around, we are talking about Angry Birds making the leap to your Samsung Smart TV, and to make sure you need not wipe smudges off the TV’s screen each time after you play, it is controlled using nothing else other than hand gestures, now how about that?
Yes sir, with the Samsung Smart TV, you are able to send your feathery friends flinging through the air with the poise of an Olympics gymnast, and this is made possible thanks to Samsung’s unique motion control feature found on their Smart TV. Not only that, it comes with a relatively generous display and offers crystal clear images for your eyes to enjoy, as though you were in the game for real. Some even said that it is approximately “97 times more fun playing it on TV”, and I guess you cannot quite dispute that when playing on Samsung’s 55-inch ES 8000 Smart TV which is approximately 97 times larger compared to the Samsung Galaxy S2′s diplay.
To enjoy some Angry Birds goodness on your Samsung Smart TV, you will first need to select the Angry Birds app in the Smart Hub, and once the game loads up, you are good to go. Activate Motion Control works as you face your palm towards the camera, and wave it slightly from left to right. There is no need to exert your energy or be too close to your TV, but do make sure you remain no further than 4 meters from the camera, otherwise the Samsung Smart TV is unable to recognize your hand.

Gadgets: Now a Harm to Our Neck?

Gadgets: Now a Harm to Our Neck?

Face it, our age of computers and smartphones and tablets is convenient, but it sure is not good for our posture. Ergonomic methods of sitting at a computer or using a device certainly exist. Yet most of us continue to hunch over our electronics as if that will help us be more productive.  The classic ‘evolution’ picture (above) is definitely true in this day and age.
Now the impacts of our mobile phones are taking its toll. First the ‘texter thumb’ reared its head. The latest issue appears to be our necks. Craning our necks to stare down at phones and tablets is now taking a toll on one of the most important parts of our body. SFLuxe.com spoke to an Orthopaedic surgeon about what he sees. And he agrees – users should take action daily, including exercising and stretching the neck. They also offer a list of simple steps you can take to prevent permanent issues.
As technology has developed, have you experienced any body breakdown? Neck? Wrist? Thumbs? Eyes? Let us hear what ails you.

Google’s Self-Driving Car clocks up 300,000 miles

Google’s Self-Driving Car clocks up 300,000 miles

A future that has self-driving cars inside are certainly not a daunting thought at all – in fact, I believe that many people who have to slug through traffic gridlocks each day as they head off to work will more than appreciate a self-driving car, especially when you do not need to engage the services of a human driver, letting you rest and relax in the vehicle’s cabin all by yourself. One of Google’s more successful side projects has been the self-driving car that you see above, and we are proud to say that this particular ride has clocked up more than 300,000 miles on its odometer, where its journey has seen the vehicle cover a huge range of traffic conditions, without a single accident happening under the guidance of its computer control.
This is definitely progress in the right direction, but I would assume that there is still plenty of work left to be done for the future. In order to deliver the best kind of self-driving vehicle experience, Google believes that they will still need to master various road conditions such as snow-covered roadways, interpret temporary construction signals while juggling a slew of other rather tricky situations which everyday drivers encounter.
Needless to say, members of the Google self-driving car team will begin to use the vehicles in a solo ride instead of being in pairs, and this new way of travel will be used to test out everyday routes such as commuting to work. Bear in mind that this would mark an important milestone, since it would brings such technology one step closer to every commuter. What would you do in a self-driving car if you knew you had an hour or so during the commute? Would you take that opportunity and doze off to catch up on your beauty sleep, or do you prefer to utilize the freed up time and indulge in a little bit of reading instead?
Many of the team members will also continue to carry out tests on their algorithms on a new type of vehicle that Google has already added to the self-driving car family over the past few months, where this step is hoped to refine their systems in various environments and on different terrain. All the best to the Lexus RX450h!

Chromium OS Blog] The road to safer, more stable, and flashier Flash

[Chromium OS Blog] The road to safer, more stable, and flashier Flash

A little more than two years ago, engineers on the Chrome team began a very ambitious project. In coordination with Adobe, we started porting Flash from the aging NPAPI architecture to our sandboxed PPAPI platform. Withlast week’s Chrome Stable release, we were finally able to ship PPAPI Flash to all Windows Chrome users, so they can now experience dramatically improved security and stability as well as improved performance down the line.

To appreciate just what a big step forward this is, it helps to understand a bit more about the history and architecture of NPAPI plug-ins. At its core, NPAPI is a thin layer of glue between the web browser and a native application. In the early days of the Web this provided a tremendous advantage, because it allowed third-party plug-ins to evolve rapidly and implement new capabilities, moving the whole web forward.

Unfortunately, as the web evolved, the past benefits of NPAPI became liabilities. The thinness allowed legacy browser and OS behavior to bleed through and crystallize to the point that it hamstrung future improvements. As browsers add compelling features like sandboxing, GPU acceleration, and a multi-process architecture, the legacy of NPAPI severely impedes or outright prevents us from extending those improvements to any pages with plug-in content.

By porting Flash to PPAPI we’ve been able to achieve what was previously impossible with NPAPI for the 99.9% of Chrome users that rely on Flash. Windows Flash is now inside a sandbox that’s as strong as Chrome’s native sandbox, and dramatically more robust than anything else available. And for the first time ever, Windows XP users (specifically, over 100 million Chrome users) have a sandboxed Flash—which is critical given the absence of OS support for security features like ASLR and integrity levels.

Beyond the security benefits, PPAPI has allowed us to move plug-ins forward in numerous other ways. By eliminating the complexity and legacy code associated with NPAPI, we’ve reduced Flash crashes by about 20%. We can also composite Flash content on the GPU, allowing faster rendering and smooth scrolling (with more improvements to come). And because PPAPI doesn’t let the OS bleed through, it’s the only way to use all Flash features on any site in Windows 8 Metro mode.

Moving forward, we’re finishing off the PPAPI Flash port for Mac OS X and hope to ship it soon. And Linux users have already been benefiting from PPAPI Flash since Chrome 20, along with Chrome OS users who have been running it for almost a year. Soon all Chrome users will have access to the improved security, stability, and performance of PPAPI Flash.

Benefits and different ways for Android devices to control digital cameras

Benefits and different ways for Android devices to control digital cameras

You might wonder why bother using an Android device to control your digital camera. Well, there sure are a lot of benefits:

1. Combination of Android software/hardware with your camera's hardware capabilities to create a super machine:

The built-in camera is lousy and the digital camera doesn't have GPS nor Internet connection. By mixing the two in one system, you can use Open CV to edit the camera view, do some advanced image processing, face recognition, instantly share your pictures using social networks like Facebook and blogs...etc.

2. One set of hardware with multiple/custom user interfaces to flexibly satisfy different end-users:

If your grandma is uncomfortable with those complicated buttons and configurations on the camera itself, why not download an application called "Canon DSLR for Dummies". Your grandma will just take a tablet or a phone along with the camera, touch 3 huge buttons to take pictures and videos. And cool, she will be using the most complicated camera in her daily life! You can also make the user interface super scientific in the Android application, to fine-tune, save, share, download and upload different configurations for your camera.

3. It turns your camera into dual-screen camera.

The best thing about having the dual screen on your digital camera is that you can take really good self portrait pictures and so no-one has to be missing from the pictures any more. You can position the camera and see as you stand how the picture will look and so this makes taking these types of pictures much easier. The dual screen also offers other advantages though and can be used to display a range of information. One of the coolest features is the way they can display a nice smiling image just before the camera takes the photo and so the subjects can tell when to smile and know when to smile for the photo. This is brilliant if you are taking photos of children as they can display something that they will like such as a clown and so they know to smile when they see this image.

4. Remote control capability.

Your phone is perfect for working with those IP surveillance cameras. You can easily get live video streaming anywhere, and change the camera angle by touching your phone screen.

How to control using an Android device?

1. Direct control solutions from Android to Camera:

Usually this approach is wired. Sometimes you need to have custom ROM on your Android device. For example, the DSLR Controller is an EOS utility app for use with Canon DSLR cameras:

Or this on-going project with nice features:

2. Indirect control solutions using a microcontroller (e.g.: from Android to Arduino to Camera):

As far as I know, there are many non-standard hacks that already used the Arduino board to control or trigger camera, for example:

To add Android control, you only need to add connection between Android and Arduino (using bluetooth or USB cable), which is easily done here (I made a list of solutions):

3. Using WiFi to control Cameras with WiFi or Ethernet features (e.g.: an IP surveillance camera or a camera with a smartphone OS):

This is an example using Android to control the Samsung SH100 using the "Remote Viewfinder":

Here are some connectivity modes between Android and another WiFi device:

I am sure there are more cool solutions to connect Android to your camera. DIYers and manufacturers, let us know what your choice is!

Why Couchbase?

Why Couchbase?

So apparently my last entry ruffled some feathers, so maybe I should explain why I think Couchbase is the future?
Simple Fast Elastic.
That's pretty much it. We make it very simple to get started, we are extremely fast (and getting faster), and we really are "web scale", with the ability to add and remove machines from a cluster to rapidly scale your capacity to your workload.
The Membase product was very fast and scalable, but a bit too simple, with no reporting capability or cross-datacenter replication capability.
The CouchDB product has a lot of features, but is too slow, unable to keep up with high loads and inability scale-out on it's own.
The combination of the 2 will hit a sweet spot to allow developers to quickly get their apps up and running, along with the reliability, speed and low cost that make running it in production cheap and worry free.
Our 2.0 product is coming soon, adding CouchDB style views and reporting with a nifty trick for extremely fast failover while maintaining full coherency with the underling distributed data storage (we are calling it our B-Superstar index). We'll of course have lighting fast reads (same as Memcached) but also very fast durable writes. For 2kb docs, we are currently getting sustained random insert/updates rates of 25k writes/sec, fully durable, with compaction in background so it can go all day and all night. We've got some more write work coming soon which we are hoping will give us another performance boost too before 2.0. Stay tuned.
And so right now the focus is on the features and customers that pay, a thing that allow us to build a real sustainable business. And that's REAL DAMN IMPORTANT. It's not enough to build some cool technology, not enough to build a community of excited technologist. You need to cross the chasm and build a real business. A business that provides support, training, documentation and of course a reliable product. A business you can call up when you have difficultly upgrading from an old version, or are getting some weird error you've never seen before at 3am. A business you know will be around to support you for years to come.
And so while we focus on the features and customers that most quickly make us a viable business (and it's growing fast), we are still looking to build the features and technology to expand our use cases and, get customers and developers excited. Future versions are planned to have full CouchDB compatible replication technology, with the ability to support all sorts of mobile and embedded databases, such as our new TouchDB projects for iOS and Android. So with Couchbase you can have fast, scalable database in the cloud that also supports the offline use of thousands, or millions of apps on devices that drop in and out of internet connectivity, and can sync when connected but still completely usable when disconnected.
