Version 3.0 Available and What’s Next

Version 3.0 Available and What’s Next

Swipe-to-moderate in version 3.0 of WordPress for iOSSwipe to moderate comments
It’s that time again. Version 3.0 of WordPress for iOS is out and adds some exciting new features. Most of the changes have been under the hood so we can now start giving you great updates fast. Let’s jump into it.

What’s new?

  • Push Notifications for WordPress.com. If you have a WordPress.com blog added to the app, you’ll now be able to opt in to receive push notifications of new comments, which makes it easier than ever to keep up with your readers and moderate comments on the go.
  • Swipe-to-moderate Toolbar. Swipe over any comment in the Comments list to bring up a moderation toolbar – no need to use bulk moderation or go to the comment permalink. It’s right there, and it’s fast. Another nifty change is the highlighting of new comments in the Comments list when you’ve refreshed, it makes it easy to see what’s new.
  • Vastly improved performance, especially for iPad. Version 2.9.6 was the most stable version of WordPress for iOS ever, until now. Over 44 bugs and crashes were fixed in this release.
  • Translations added for Chinese (Taiwan), Hungarian, and Polish (thanks for the translation help!)

  • slide-out iPhone/iPod Touch Menu will allow for quicker access to the things you do the most in the app, and provide a great overview.

returning a rectangle through an arraylist

returning a rectangle through an arraylist

i have an arraylist that creates balls at random points x and y with set height and width of 20. each ball is created every 3 seconds and then stored in the arraylist

Code :

public ArrayList<Ball> BALLS;

thats the array for storing the balls, which are made in this class

Code :

 class Ball
    {
        int x;
        int y;
        int width;
        int height;

        public Ball(int x, int y, int width, int height)
        {
             this.x = x;
             this.y = y;
             this.width = width;
             this.height = height;
        }//end ball

        public void paint(Graphics g)
        {
                g.setColor(color[getRandomColor()]);
                g.fillOval(x, y, width, height);
        }                    //end paint

im trying to return the balls as rectangles with the getBallBounds method so i can use that method for collision detection

this is in my ball class
Code :

public Rectangle getBallBounds()
        {
         for(int i = 0; i < BALLS.size(); i++)
         {
          return new Rectangle(BALLS.get(i).x, BALLS.get(i).y, 20, 20);
         }
            Rectangle ballRectangle = getBallBounds();
        }

/**

*/
public Tank()

full = false;
myFish = null;
newFishFeeder = null;
}

/**

myFish = fish;
full = true;
}
else
{
System.out.println("Sorry there is no room in the tank. It is already occupied and the resident fish will not share. ");
}
}

/**
* Remove the fish - e.g. if it has died.
*/
public void removeFish()
{
// Can only remove if there is a fish there
if(full)
{
myFish = null;
full = false;
}
}

Ace Reader

Ace Reader

Top Five Features

Ace Reader Pro is considered once of the most advanced and sophisticated speed reading software solutions, and there is no doubt it lives up to this expectation. But does it outperform some of the other top options? In many areas it is equal, but it falls behind in a few key areas and as such, may not appeal to everyone searching for the ultimate speed reading solution.

Although it has been recently updated with new capabilities like PDF upload, on the downside are problems like the inability to go back and give more attention to previous tasks or aspects of the software, due to the course having to be completed in a specific order. This may not bother most people, and the interactive games, drills and tests certainly have the capability to distract from this small downfall.
It can also be disappointing to learn that Ace Reader does not give you 100% of the content that you'll need to complete the speed reading course. Rather, AceReaderPro gives you just half of the package, and the second package must be purchased separately with AceReader Deluxe. This can lead to a more expensive investment than one first expected or planned.
There are also some add-ons which, instead of being included in the packages, are charged at $20 each.

Ease Of Use

Ace Reader does lack some of the all ages friendliness of other speed reading software. It is targeted mostly at more mature students and adults so is likely not the best option for someone wishing to teach speed reading to younger children.

Help And Support

Phone, email and fax details are provided for support. Also available on the Ace Reader website is a Quick Start Guide and full manuals, plus a very helpful FAQ.

Top Three Reasons To Choose Ace Reader

  1. Ace Reader has some quality capabilities when it comes to reporting. Students are easily able to see areas where some improvement is needed, as well as being able to intuitively track progress throughout the course. It is also possible to customize the speed to your own skill level and progress.
  2. Up to 20 minutes is needed per session for Ace Reader, which is a little more than is required for some of the other speed reading software. This can make it a little more difficult for busy people to fit into their schedule, but would suit those with ample leisure time.
  3. It is possible to tailor the software for classroom or tutorial environments for multiple users, however this is not available in the cheapest standard version.

Phenomenal Memory

Phenomenal Memory

Top Five Features

Phenomenal Memory makes some pretty large claims at its ability to enhance your memory skills. One of these is the ability to teach you how to memorize entire books - this might sound unbelievable to some, but once you really start to understand how memory improvement works, it does not seem so implausible. In fact, Phenomenal Memory guarantees book memorization as a result of taking its program.
Phenomenal Memory makes use of some of the latest research into memory improvement. It does not dwell on repetition, associations or other traditional methods that are now thought to be ineffective. Instead the product incorporates an extensive 60 lesson course that covers recalling virtually any type of information that's fed into the brain (including entire books).
You won't find any mnemonic methods that don't work in this course. Instead, breakthrough methods of learning are put into practice but this doesn't include CD's, seminars or anything that you'd find in the old fashioned courses. The aim is to literally exercise the brain into becoming better at memorizing absolutely anything. Practice makes perfect, and this couldn't be more apt when it comes to memory enhancement.
The system lets you work at your own pace, as do all the top memory improvement courses. You don't end up feeling rushed or pressured, which is important if your mind is to remain clear and focused on the task at hand.
One interesting aspect is the focus on nutrition. Many people don't realize that what you eat can drastically affect your brain's functioning. Defiency in any one of many vitamins or minerals can really impact your memory. The fact that Phenomenal Memory also touches on this important subject shows that they have done extensive research into the entire spectrum of memory, from the ground up.

Ease of Use

The lessons are practical and enjoyable and the instructors are there to make sure that you stay on track throughout the entire course. This all happens within the Online Student Area.

Help And Support

A money back guarantee is offered on the program in good faith.

Top Three Reasons To Choose Phenomenal Memory

  1. Students gain access to 60 lessons which are accessible on the developer's website. The guarantee is that after completing all the lessons, you will be able to memorize anything from names and numbers, up to entire books. The minimum number of lessons that can be taken each week is three, although the maximum number per day is only one. This ensures that students don't rush through the material and have time to absorb each step.
  2. The instructors are a critical part of this course, and you can rely on them to be there to watch that your progress remains steady the entire time. The Online Student Area provides easy access to this unique and dedicated resource.
  3. There are 5 parts, and each part contains between 8 and 16 lessons. This starts with 12 lessons of Basic Training, then moves on to First Database, then Foreign Languages. The 4th part is Books and Complicated Texts and finally, 8 lessons of Codes and Passwords.

Word Smart

Word Smart

Top Five Features

There are many versions of Word Smart Vocabulary software targeted at different ages and aimed at being used for different outcomes and goals. These are:
Grade School Excellence
Middle School Excellence
High School Excellence
SAT & ACT Test Prep
Adult Learning Excellence
GRE & GMAT Test Prep
The High School Excellence edition has an aim of enabling the student to have a better chance of getting into the college of their choice, through enhancing the vocabulary and working to improve the SAT or ACT scores. Some adult students may like to also start with this edition, before moving on to some of the more advanced disks that are suitable for people all the way up to PhD level.
There are over 10,000 pronounced words and 2800 definitions in the software plus about 400 core words. This >is significantly less than some of the other vocabulary solutions out there, namely Ultimate Vocabulary which has over 150,000 words.
The flashcard exercise section is not as content rich as the multiple choice section, but is an excellent way to become familiar with new words and definitions.
The column matching exercise is a basic strategy for matching a core word to the corresponding synonym. The Sentence Completion and Spelling Bee sections are not only helpful, but inject some fun into the software. And the game-like Laser Review is an amusing Asteroids-style way of learning new definitions (fun for all ages!).

Ease Of Use

There are some great aspects of Word Smart. It is very easy to use and has an excellent, clean interface. It only takes an investment of a few hours on a weekly basis to see fast improvements in your vocabulary.

Help And Support

An extensive FAQ can be found on the official website. Patches and updates are also provided for customers, ensuring you always have the latest version. There is also a toll free phone number plus an email contact form for support.

Top Three Reasons To Choose Word Smart

  1. There are many learning strategies included in each software version including:
    • Flash cards
    • Word matching
    • Games
    • Sentence completion
    • Multiple choice quizzes
    • Audio pronunciations
  2. The software tracks the student's progress automatically and only once a section is sufficiently passed can the next section be attempted.
  3. The main home screen begins with letting you select from the 5 learning modes. You can also monitor your progress from here and view the talking word list. The first multiple choice mode is a simple learning method, yet highly effective. Audio discussion is included after the correct word is identified.

Summary

Unlike some of the other vocabulary programs, Word Smart requires you to purchase the right software for your age, or for your child's age. This can result in an increased expense (each edition is priced at a whopping $214.99) and as time goes on, if you choose to continue education. Rather than creating the software to scale to the person's age and skill level in one package, multiple packages will be needed. This is certainly one of the main downsides to Word Smart.

Word Smart is an award winning vocabulary program for good reason. It has an easy to use interface that is suitable for almost all ages, provided the correct package is purchased. This, as mentioned, could be the main downside to this otherwise excellent set of learning tools.

Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro 4

Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro 4

Top Five Features:

    1. Ultimate Performance Boost - Software Review Boffin found that Disk Defrag Pro increased file access speed, meaning that just about everything on a PC will work faster.
    2. Smart Defrag Algorithms - Thanks to 4 different algorithms for intelligent file placement, a users hard drive will always run at its top speed.
    3. Boot-time Defrag - Now with Disk Defrag Pro users are able to defrag every single file, including crucial system files that are normally locked by Windows.
    4. Fragmentation Prevention - Disk Defrag Pro not only defrags, but also can prevent further fragmentation by leaving free space after specified files.
    5. Disk Cleanup And Checkup - For faster and safer defragmentation, Software Review Boffin found that users can set the program to remove temp files and check disks for errors.

Ease of Use:

Very often Software Review Boffin finds that advanced system optimization utilities are difficult to use and designed for computer users. There are a lot of features that require expertise and even the use of command prompt. But we are pleased to say that's not the case with Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro. The program is very easy to use and all its features are easily accessible. And if you need any help, there is a detailed PDF user manual available on Auslogics' website.

Speed and Performance:

If you've ever used the Windows built-in defragmenter, then you would know that it can take hours for defragmentation to complete. One of the huge benefits of Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro is that it's very fast. That's because the tool uses special algorithms that allow to speed up the process without compromising the quality of defragmentation. This makes the tool very quick and very efficient at the same time. Software Review Boffin is impressed!!

The top three reasons to choose Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro:

    1. Multiple defrag algorithms - There are 4 disk optimization algorithms available for users to choose from. Use the Optimize by Access Time method when you wish for faster access to frequently used files. In order to speed up your system loading and application startup, simply use the Optimize by Prefetch Layout algorithm. If you are just wanting to reduce further file fragmentation, then choose Optimize by Change Time. And finally, the Optimize by Disk Zone algorithm allows users to manually specify which file types or even individual files should be written to the faster part of the disk.
    2. Offline Defragmentation - The new Offline Defragmentation engine makes it possible to defragment important system files that are normally locked and can't be moved while Windows is running. Offline Defragmentation is performed on system boot, before the operating system loads. It allows you to streamline the following system files: MFT files, Paging file, Hibernation file and Windows Registry files. Defragmenting system files will make your Windows more responsive, speed up system loading and overall performance.
    3. Comprehensive Reports - With new comprehensive reports in the Professional version, it is easy to track all of the operations performed by the program. Users are able to view the degree of file and free space fragmentation, size of the largest contiguous free space block available on their disk, and number of files processed during each operation. Users can also track the general condition of their disk and performance improvements through graphic charts. All reports can be viewed, printed and stored in a format convenient for them.

Help and Support:

Auslogics Software is offering many support features, including FAQs, e-mail and phone facilities and other forms of help as and when needed. These mainly help to teach users more about the software to use it effectively as possible.

License and price:

Software Review Boffin confirmed that Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro has a 30-day free trial period. The trial is fully functional, so that customers will be able to use all the features of the program. Key Masters: 4 Portable Secure Hard Drives Tested

Key Masters: 4 Portable Secure Hard Drives Tested

Overview & Advice
  • Overview & Advice
  • Apricorn Aegis Padlock 3
  • Rocstor Rocsafe MX
  • Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Secure Drive
  • DataLocker DL3

Basics:
What extra protection does hardware encryption add?
A system password is a software program like any other, so a determined thief can remove the hard drive from your computer, attach it to another machine, and crack the password. But these drives won't even mount on a PC desktop unless you first pass a hardware-based authentication test: typing a PIN on a keypad, swiping a fingerprint, tapping an RFID badge, or entering a code displayed on a separate dongle. Fail the hardware tests and the drive locks up. Even if somebody cracks open the case and removes the drive, there's still a 128- or 256-bit military-grade encryption algorithm built into the firmware, so your data is run through a digital Cuisinart before it's even written to the disk, rendering it unreadable.
So they're uncrackable?
No. No encryption is. But if you store your sensitive info on one of these drives, there's a very good chance nobody will ever see it without your say-so. Brazilian and FBI codebreakers spent two years trying to decipher data on the hardware-secured drives of a Brazilian banker suspected of money laundering—before giving up in 2010.
What if I lose my passcode?
All these drives have an admin mode; admins can create codes for up to 10 or so users and can reset a forgotten code. If you're not the admin, the "forgot my passcode" drill is somewhat forgiving. You get up to 25 attempts, after which the drive will require a factory-programmed fail-safe code to enable more PIN entries. After 50 or so failed attempts, the drive assumes it's under attack and self-destructs.
Buying Advice
These drives cost two to five times as much as unprotected drives -- if you just want to stash your Beatles MP3s, look elsewhere. Chip-based 256-bit encryption and security features like automatic self-destruct are the norm, so all these drives offer the same base level of protection. Your decision should come down to transfer speed, keypad usability, and, if your data is top-secret, the inclusion of secondary authenticators like smartcards and RFID readers.

The Revolution Will Be Motorized

Acer’s Aspire S5 ultrabook has been upgraded to include dual SSD drives and the latest Intel (Ivy Bridge) processors. Photo by Peter McCollough/Wired

There’s no point beginning a review of the Acer Aspire S5 with a discussion of anything other than its approach to ports.
Look at the sides and back of the S5 and you’ll find almost none: An SD card slot, headphone jack, and power port are the only visible connectors to the outside world.
The Aspire S5 is a pricey and powerful entry into the ultrabook market from an unlikely source.
This isn’t some radical approach to cutting the cord, but rather the most audacious way of hiding connectors that I’ve seen in over a decade of reviewing laptops. Open the lid of the S5 and push the button in the top right corner of the keyboard, the one with the baffling icon printed on it.
When you do this, a motorized hatch opens up, dropping down from the bottom of the laptop to reveal two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, and a Thunderbolt connector. Press it again and the hatch, which is called the “MagicFlip I/O port launcher,” seals back up, almost like it’s getting ready to return to the alien planet from which it came. But more on all of this later.
The MagicFlip I/O port launcher in a state of full tumescence. Photo by Peter McCollough/Wired
The Aspire S5 is a pricey and powerful entry into the ultrabook market from an unlikely source. Acer is not a company you would normally associate with such a unique approach to minimalist design, nor is it a company you would think would figure out a way to wedge into this notebook dual 128GB SSD drives configured in a RAID 0 array, giving it jaw-dropping performance for the category.
With the S5, Acer really has upped the ante on ultrabook configurations, not just with the 256GB of SSD storage but also with its 1.9GHz Core i7 CPU, a rarity in a world where Core i5 rules. The screen — 13.3 inches and 1366 x 768 pixels — is nothing special, nor are the 4GB of RAM and integrated graphics. But Acer does manage to squeeze all of the above into 18mm of thickness and a 2.6-pound chassis, which is a good 0.3 pounds lighter than a MacBook Air. Battery life, at about 4 hours, 20 minutes, is average for the category.

The Aspire S5 is a performer. In fact, it’s my new recordholder on the PCMark 7 benchmark, which especially favors fast I/O systems like this one. Those speedy SSD drives also earned the Aspire S5 another testing record: The laptop takes just 16 seconds to cold boot Windows. Sure, it’s no great shakes with graphics, but playing with the MagicFlip is more fun than Skyrim anyway.
By now I’ve probably spent hours messing with the MagicFlip hatch and remain as baffled as when I first unboxed the machine. Generally, it works, but the ominous grinding noise it makes when slowly creaking open and shut instills zero confidence. Acer says it’s been rigorously tested, but I still had plenty of trouble with it. When holding the laptop at some angles, the hatch just doesn’t open reliably. And if your battery is low, the hatch can become even more problematic, sometimes getting stuck with one side open and one side shut, reminding one a bit of the capsized Costa Concordia. “What if it breaks?” is a great question, and one which Acer has not fully answered.
The price premium here is ultimately what may be the bigger hill to climb. The $1,400 price tag is justified given the extra storage capacity, but it’s still tough to swallow when competitors’ ultrabooks can be had for under $1,000. Now if only that hatch would open and close as fast as the Aspire runs Excel….

TIRED Loud, grinding fan. Small keys, too widely spaced. Arrow keys are so diminutive they’re nearly unusuable. Two USB ports isn’t enough.

Motorola Reboots the Atrix, Gives It a Killer Screen

Motorola Reboots the Atrix, Gives It a Killer Screen

Motorola’s Atrix HD smartphone has a nice price at $100 on contract, but its killer feature is the 4.5-inch touchscreen, which offers an iPhone-rivaling level of clarity. Photo by Peter McCollough/Wired

A little less than two years ago, Apple’s iPhone 4 made its debut with a display of unrivaled clarity. The Retina display’s pixel density of 326 pixels per inch gave it a sharpness that no Android phone could match.
Just this past May, the HTC One X made its U.S. debut, complete with a beautiful display packing 316 pixels per inch. Finally, Retina-like quality could be had on an Android phone. But, like the iPhone 4S (which has the same screen as the now $100 iPhone 4), the One X is a premium product that wears a premium $200 price tag.
With the arrival of the Morotola Atrix HD, which is available for $100 on-contract from AT&T, Android fans now have a modestly priced handset with a sharp, iPhone-like display.
It was only a matter of time before such high-quality displays started trickling down to $100 Android handsets, but I wouldn’t have guessed it would happen this soon. With the arrival of the Morotola Atrix HD, which is available for $100 on-contract from AT&T, Android fans now have a modestly priced handset with a sharp, iPhone-like display.
The 4.5-inch screen really is a stunner. At a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and with a density of 331 pixels per inch, text looks crisp and images are rich with detail. Colors, while a bit bright and over-saturated compared to the One X and iPhone, are beautiful. Pixel artifacts like stair-stepping are indiscernible. Motorola calls the Gorilla Glass-topped LCD panel on the Atrix HD a “ColorBoost” display. If this is the future of Motorola’s display technology, it’s going to be a pretty one.
If you drop $100 on the Atrix HD, you can feel confident that you won’t tire of this display. But there’s more to the phone than the screen — the rest of the device delivers plenty of high-end features at a mid-range price.
The Atrix HD is essentially an evolution of Motorola’s Verizon-exclusive Droid Razr and Droid Razr Maxxhandsets. At 0.33-inches, the Atrix HD is thicker than the Razr, but thinner than the Razr Maxx. Like the Razr line, the Atrix HD has a Kevlar back panel and contains a chassis made of a mix of metal and plastic that feels tough and looks good.
Inside you get a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor — a bump up from the Razr and Razr Maxx’s 1.2GHz dual-core Texas Instruments CPUs — and 1GB of RAM. This combination doesn’t disappoint. The Atrix HD is fast and responsive, easily handling games, apps, video playback and everything else I threw at it.

One surprise here is Motorola’s implementation of Ice Cream Sandwich. HTC’s own version of Android 4.0, called Sense, was my favorite variation of Google’s mobile OS aside from stock Android as seen on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus.
At least, that was the case before I got the Atrix HD in my hands. Motorola is currently offering the closest experience to stock Android that you can find in a manufacturer’s skin. This is a major win for Google, for Motorola and for consumers. It’s unlikely that Google’s recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility had any influence on this decision, as Google has said many times that it intends to let Motorola chart its own course. But still, kudos.
The lockscreen is unique, with the ability to open the handset directly into the camera, the phone, the text messaging app, or to your primary homescreen. Motorola also adds a few widgets to the Atrix’s homescreen. These can be easily removed, but they’re actually helpful. For example, a cluster of three circles presents the time and date in one orb, local weather in another, and data usage in a third. Swipe your finger across any of the circles and the presented information changes: the digital clock becomes an analog clock, the weather toggles between different cities, and you can switch between seeing remaining battery life or remaining storage. Customizable and relevant information, presented clearly with a simple UI — this is how widgets should behave.

A Pro-Level Recording Tool at a Pro-Level Price

A Pro-Level Recording Tool at a Pro-Level Price

If you’ve got a smartphone, you’ve got an audio recording device with you. Anytime you want, you can fire up an app and record a conversation, a bit of a concert, or an audio snapshot.
The results are often only so-so. The crappy mono microphone at the base of your smartphone isn’t very forgiving, the allowed length is limited, and smartphone apps rarely give you much control over the nit-picky stuff: the recording quality, the input levels, or the resulting file type.
What makes Olympus’ portable recorder really stand out are the multi-tracking features that transform the device into a bona fide pocket studio for musicians and songwriters.
But it’s the nit-picky stuff that really matters if you want the best sound. A dedicated hand-held audio recorder like the Olympus LS-100 gives you the desired level of control, producing awesome (stereo) recordings that far surpass what you can capture with a mobile handset, even if you’re using a fancy accessory microphone. It’s great for recording bands, or performances of any kind. But what makes Olympus’ portable recorder really stand out are the multi-tracking features that transform the device into a bona fide pocket studio for musicians and songwriters.
At $400, the LS-100 is twice as expensive as like-minded models with fewer features. So the high cost mostly makes sense for working musicians or serious audio hobbyists who will take advantage of the advanced features. But if you’re in this camp, this is one of the best — and best-sounding — portable audio recorders you can buy.
There are several options in this space (models from Tascam, Sony and Zoom being the stand-outs) all of which have a few things in common: a pair of nice stereo condenser mics at the top; an SD card slot; combo line/XLR inputs with phantom power for external microphones; on-board editing and mixing; and the ability to record at multiple quality levels, from lowly MP3 all the way up to 96kHz/24-bit WAV.
I’ve been using a portable recording device for a few years (a Tascam DR-1) whenever my smartphone just won’t cut it — when recording a DJ set or a band practice session, when I want to roll “tape” for two hours or longer. Also, I use it a lot at nightclubs when a friend’s band is playing and we want to capture a sweet-sounding recording of the performance.

To test the Olympus LS-100, I used it in all three of these situations. It performed great, especially for live recordings. The mics are excellent. Monitoring a recording visually and dialing in the correct levels using the stacked input knobs is very easy, (and you’d be surprised how difficult this is on some recorders). The peak indicators are actually more sensitive than they should be, which gives you ample warning to ease the levels down before things get distorted. Also, there’s a visual Lissajous meter that helps you place the recorder in the correct spot in a room to avoid unwanted phasing effects. Mic placement makes all the difference when you’re recording a live band, so this is helpful, but since it uses a reference tone to measure the mic placement, you’ll need access to the room’s PA system in order to find the safe zone.
Built into the LS-100 is a multi-tracking software suite that basically turns the recorder into an 8-track studio. I recorded a few demos with it (using the built-in mics for guitars and the line-in for keyboards) and the results sounded excellent, better than any other digital 8-track with built-in mics I’ve tried. The on-board editing is merely OK — the tiny screen and a scarcity of physical controls forces you to do the bulk of your overdubbing, punching in, bouncing and editing by way of a set of scrolling menus. As you can imagine, this is mind-numbing. But, it works.
So, it makes outstanding live recordings at clubs, and it serves as a nice sketchpad for writing songs. But I also wanted to see how it would fare as a simple reporter’s tool for recording interviews, so I passed it to Wired senior reporter Kim Zetter. She interviewed a subject sitting about 10 feet away from the recorder, and it picked up his voice as clearly as if he were sitting right next to her. She also recorded panel sessions at a conference that were very clear — recorders often can’t pick up clear sound from speakers in large conference halls, but this one did a great job. She wasn’t thrilled with the size, as it doesn’t fit easily into a pocket, and if you’re speaking to someone who’s already shy about talking to reporters, sticking a humongous recorder in their face doesn’t help that situation.
Apart from the high price and large size, the only other drawback is the LS-100′s user interface issues. But as with any device, once you spend a little bit of time with it, the menus get more familiar and you’re soon breezing through the settings. So if you’re OK with the learning curve — and you have ample time to thumb through the user guide — I can recommend it.
WIRED Excellent condenser mics arranged at 90° can handle up to 140 decibels. Multiple inputs can accept a variety of external mics or line-level sources. Can be used as a USB microphone to record audio to a laptop. Supports SD cards up to 64GB. Battery lasts 10 to 12 hours per charge. Rugged build — this isn’t some delicate Dictaphone.
TIRED $400 price makes it a smart buy only for pros or serious live-music enthusiasts. It’s bulky, and tough to sneak past security at the Fillmore. Interface is more trial-and-error than intuitive, and the user manual is thicker than The Great Gatsby.

Dell’s New Ultrabook Isn’t Really an Ultrabook, But It Acts Like One

Dell’s New Ultrabook Isn’t Really an Ultrabook, But It Acts Like One

Dell’s refreshed Inspiron 14z laptop is barely thin and light enough to qualify as an ultrabook. But it performs well, making it a good buy at $900 for the 14-inch model. Photo by Peter McCollough/Wired

Dell’s Inspiron gets a big makeover this year, evolving (at last) into a sleek and modern-looking laptop while maintaining a very low price.
Marketed as an ultrabook, the new Inspiron 14z may surprise you at first since it’s a 14-inch model instead of the usual 13.3. At 23 millimeters thick, it’s also technically a bit fat to meet Intel’s ultrabook rules (21mm is the limit for 14-inch systems), but Dell probably skirts this by not including the rubber feet in its measurements.
A curvy and handsome blend of plastic and brushed aluminum, the 14z, at 4.2 pounds, is the lightest 14-inch laptop I’ve tested literally in years.
A curvy and handsome blend of plastic and brushed aluminum, the 14z, at 4.2 pounds, is the lightest 14-inch laptop I’ve tested literally in years. I can’t complain about the specs, either, which include a 1.7GHz third-generation Core i5 (Ivy Bridge), 500GB hard drive, 8GB of RAM, and switchable AMD Radeon HD 7570M graphics. Ports cover only the basics: one USB 2.0, one USB 3.0, full-size Ethernet, SD card reader, and HDMI out. However, there’s also an integrated optical drive, another ultrabook oddity.
It all sounds pretty good, but that excitement is tempered once the 14z is turned on. The sheer volume of preinstalled software is daunting, from a large Accuweather widget to a backup manager to the giant Dell Stagequick-launch toolbar that dominates the home screen. Navigating the many popups all these apps throw out isn’t easy, particularly because the trackpad is so incredibly sensitive, and clicks fail to register with a surprising regularity, an unusual problem on a laptop with discrete buttons.
The keyboard is also a curious letdown. The keys are extremely small, a problem that is compounded by their heavily rounded corners and mushy action. All in all, typing just isn’t a comfortable experience.

On the performance front, the 14z comes through better than you’d expect at this price level. It’s nothing record-breaking, and while there were no problems with general apps, graphics performance was hit and miss. Mainly this was due to issues with the switchable GPU, which is configured via a control panel that lets you turn discrete graphics on or off on a by-application basis. This is an interesting approach, but it’s also an invasive one that creates even more pop-ups you have to deal with, and if you make a mistake, changing a selection you’ve already made once for an application is difficult.
I also encountered a bug where applications would report they were using integrated graphics whether or not I set them to use the discrete GPU. It’s a frustrating problem because there’s no easy way to tell which GPU is active. Either way, graphics performance is not terribly impressive, and even with the GPU active, I didn’t see framerates over 20fps on most modern game titles.
It’s important to keep in perspective, though, that this is an $900, 14-inch ultrabook that includes an optical drive and still weighs barely four pounds. Aside from its weight, little about the 14z is especially earth-shattering, but a proper ultrabook really shouldn’t be shattering anything, should it?
WIRED Great combination of portability, performance, and value. Decent battery life: About 4 hours with DVD playback.
TIRED Input problems all around, from tiny keyboard to jittery touchpad. Cheap port covers on left side just get in the way. Dim screen, with uninspiring 1366 x 768-pixel resolution. Could use another couple of USB ports. Difficulty with switchable graphics system.
