Finite image slider

Finite image slider

Reading time: 4 – 6 minutes
I’ve been asked to come up with an image slider prototype for something new we were doing at work.
I would generally just find a suitable sliding jQuery plug-in and get the developers to use it. However, this time, there were two very peculiar requirements necessary for this slider (hence why I was asked to prototype it)
  1. The image slider should only display the next and previous arrow when there was something to display. It should hide the arrows if it didn’t have a next or a previous item to display.
  2. Ordinarily image sliders are infinite, which means you can keep clicking next forever, and it will always loop through the images. This alone negates the requirement above, since you always have a previous and a next image. So I had to somehow limit the image slider to only go up to the last image when clicking forward, and stop at the first image when rewinding.
I looked at a few options for this, but most of the image sliders out there seem to not allow you to have full control over the display of the arrows, or to make it stop when it reaches the last images. Also, most of them seem to only open up in a light boxes, which makes it less ideal when you don’t want to distract your users off the main objective of the website (don’t get me wrong though, light boxes are cool, but they have their time and place).
I then came across to Nivo Slider(http://nivo.dev7studios.com/), which claims to be the “The world’s most awesome jQuery & WordPress Image Slider”. I can’t really comment on that statement, but I can tell you they’re pretty good, and have lots of different options for you to use in your image sliders, as well as allowing various transitions between each slide.
Implementing it was very straightforward, as all you need to do is import their css, chose a css theme and the plug-in itself (I’ll assume you already have jQuery installed)
My code then ended up looking like this:
<link rel="stylesheet" href="theme/default.css" type="text/css" media="screen" />
<link rel="stylesheet" href="theme/nivo-slider.css" type="text/css" media="screen" />
<script type="text/javascript" src="scripts/jquery.nivo.slider.pack.js"></script>
<div class="slider-wrapper theme-default">
    <div id="slider" class="nivoSlider">
        <img src="images/image_1.jpg" alt="" title="" />
        <img src="images/image_2.jpg" alt="" title="" />
        <img src="images/image_3.jpg" alt="" title="" />
        <img src="images/image_4.jpg" alt="" title="" />
        <img src="images/image_5.jpg" alt="" title="" />
    </div>
</div>
<script type="text/javascript">
$(window).load(function() {
    $('#slider').nivoSlider({
directionNavHide: true,
manualAdvance: true,
directionNav: true,
controlNav: false
    })
});
</script>
view rawfile1.jsThis Gist is brought to you using Simple Gist Embed.
The code above will pretty much get you going, and your images should now load nicely on the screen, and you should be able to slide through them.
However, when you do it, you will notice none of the requirements mentioned above have been fulfilled, since you ended up with an image slider.
To get the arrows to show and hide dynamically, I did a bit of research and found  someone doing that exact same thing. So it was just a matter of adding that to my code, and attaching it to the “afterChange” event, which will get called every time you click through any of the arrows.
<script>
function arrowsCtrl () {
var SlideNo = jQuery('#slider').data('nivo:vars').currentSlide;
var TotalSlidesNo = jQuery('#slider').data('nivo:vars').totalSlides;
if (SlideNo==TotalSlidesNo-1) {jQuery('#slider .nivo-nextNav').hide();jQuery('#slider').data('nivoslider').stop();};
if (SlideNo==TotalSlidesNo-2) {jQuery('#slider .nivo-nextNav').show();jQuery('#slider').data('nivoslider').start();};
if (SlideNo==1) jQuery('#slider .nivo-prevNav').show();
if (SlideNo==0) jQuery('#slider .nivo-prevNav').hide();
};
</script>

T-Mobile Galaxy S II update brings Isis support to battle Google Wallet

T-Mobile Galaxy S II update brings Isis support to battle Google Wallet

There hasn’t been much talk about Isis lately. The Google Wallet competitor made up of many partners including T-Mobile, Verizon, and other carriers that want to do things their own way. Today T-Mobile and Samsung have issued an update for their Galaxy S II smartphone that makes the device the first Isis-ready smartphone.

The update is a rather small one from T-Mobile and is only available using Samsung Kies software to update, not over the air. Is it just me or are some getting fed up with Samsung not allowing simple over the air wireless updates. In order to accept the new update users will be required to be running the latest official update to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich for the T-Mo Galaxy S II.
The update changelog is extremely small and doesn’t bring anything too exciting — except Isis. We have the usual bug fixes and performance enhancements, but that is all. Then you’ll notice Isis/NFC update. This is making the device the first Isis ready smartphone to try the new mobile payment solution to take on Google Wallet.
We’re not sure if the update actually brings Isis to the device as a pre-installed app, or just makes it ready for usage. Either way be sure and get the latest Samsung Kies, update the device, and give it a try. Personally I’ve been a fan of Google Wallet since the beginning, but more competition usually works out best for us consumers. Let us know how the update goes in the comments below. More details can be found at the T-Mobile support page.

Apple seeking to ban 8 different Samsung devices

Apple seeking to ban 8 different Samsung devices

Late last week, the jury deciding the patent suit between Apple and Samsung delivered their verdict, and as many of you already know, things didn’t work out so well for ol’ Sammy. Now that the trial is over, Samsung and Apple have the opportunity to file post-trial motions. Obviously, Apple wants a number of Samsung devices banned from sale following the jury’s verdict, and today it delivered a list of 8 devices its looking to secure a ban on.

Apple is trying to ban the Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S II from AT&T, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy S II from T-Mobile, Galaxy S II Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail from sale in the United States. After seeing that list, there’s no doubt that Apple wants to hit Samsung hard, as that covers all of the Galaxy S II models available in the United States. Even though the Galaxy S III has been available for a few months now, the Galaxy S II is still a big Samsung seller, so this list isn’t only comprised of smartphones that aren’t pulling in any new sales.
Samsung will be fighting this motion to ban its devices in a response it’s required to file by September 12. Will Samsung’s efforts to stop a ban go anywhere? That’s difficult to say, especially after the jury found that all of those devices were infringing on Apple patents. The two technology giants are scheduled to be back in front of Judge Koh on September 20 for a hearing about the proposed ban, but that may change if Koh decides to give Samsung more time to prepare for the hearing.
Samsung is going to have its work cut out for it if the company wants to fight these bans. If such bans are ordered, don’t expect Samsung to just sit back and take it, as the company will definitely be appealing the verdict, going up as high as the Supreme Court if it has to. Even though the trial has been decided and Apple declared the winner, the fight between the two companies is still a long way from being finished.

Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 announced – and it’s massiv

Samsung Galaxy Player 5.8 announced – and it’s massive

Samsung is back today with their latest Galaxy Player announcement. This time around they’ve just unleashed details on their biggest media player yet, and I just feel like calling it a tablet. Samsung’s iPod-rivaling Galaxy Player just got an upgrade to a massive 5.8-inch display so lets take a look.

Hopefully this doesn’t have the bounce-back feature that Apple loves — just kidding. Honestly I love the design and it looks very similar to the popular Galaxy S III, yet has the front facing speakers that we loved on the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. This gigantic 5.8-inch media player is surely running Android and I want one already.
The Galaxy Player 5.8 consists of a qHD 540 x 960 (sadly no HD) display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Sammy’s TouchWiz UX interface changes, 16 or 32GB storage options along with the Samsung Music Hub, and a massive 2,500 mAh battery will keep it blasting music for days and days. No mention of the processor under the hood. Then as usual we have WiFi, GPS, and the entire device measures in at 165.8 x 85.9 x 10.8 mm and 221g.

Again, this is another case of hit every size market as humanly possible and see what sticks. They’ve got multiple players in the 3, 4, and now 5-inch size, as well as multiple 7, 7.7, 8.9, and 10-inch tablets. Things are getting a bit crazy in Samsung land but I’m personally really liking the idea of a larger than usual media player that is far more portable than a tablet.
No pricing or exact details were released from Samsung but we can expect the media player to go on sale starting in September. We’ll be seeing it at IFA this week so stay tuned if this huge device interests you.

Google makes a brief statement regarding Apple v Samsung trial

Google makes a brief statement regarding Apple v Samsung trial

Up until today Google has been rather silent regarding the Apple vs Samsung lawsuit that many are calling AppSung. After the jury ruled completely and utterly in favor of Apple claiming Samsung infringed on multiple patents — and requested over 1 billion in damages Google has finally chimed in with a comment.

Just like the jury’s deliberation, Google’s response is short and sweet — and that is all we get for now. While there will obviously be tons more to this story (sadly) over the next few weeks and months, today Google mentioned that they aren’t too worried about the results. Here’s what the old Goog had to say:
“The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims. Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the U.S. Patent Office. The mobile industry is moving fast and all players — including newcomers — are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.”
They do briefly mention that many of the “ideas” have been around for decades, and we totally agree but don’t get us started. Based on comments from AllThingsD Google doesn’t sound too concerned, but then they did just pick up a huge patent portfolio with their acquisition of Motorola Mobility.
To be honest however, as much as Google gained from the Moto acquisition this has to be somewhat unsettling for Google and their partners. While Samsung does have a chance at many appeals (or more) this mess is still far from over regarding Samsung, and the many other OEMs. AllThingsD seems to think Apple will be headed for Google directly next. All I have to say about that is — notification pull-down bar!

LG Intuition press photos leak – Reveal September 15 release date

LG Intuition press photos leak – Reveal September 15 release date

An upcoming smartphone for Verizon Wireless, the LG Intuition (formerly known as the Optimus Vu) is still a rather large phablet device, but now we have some official photos. LG released their Optimus Vu earlier this year internationally and we’ve seen countless leaks this month confirming a Verizon launch. Now today we are getting our first press shot.

Previously we heard the Optimus Vu would launch during quarter 3, then we saw some leaked photos confirming it was headed to Verizon. Then last wee we got our biggest set of details with an official screenshot confirming the device will be called the LG Intuition on Verizon with 4G LTE for only $199.
Basically it is still the same huge device only with Verizon branding all over it. You’ll still have the same 5-inch 4:3 aspect ratio display, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and of course that included stylus for pen input. We’ve had our hands on this phone more than once (linked below) and can confirm it’s huge, and feels awkward to hold.
This was birthed after seeing the success of Samsung’s Galaxy Note, and now they are set to release theNote 2 this week we have a feeling LG is a little late to the party. Since the Galaxy Note never made it to Verizon this will have to fill the void, unless of course the Note 2 launches for Big Red. As usual we get excited seeing a date on the press photos “date/weather” widget, and here we have September 15th. We could see this launch on Verizon come the 15th for $199.

Lenovo IdeaPad A2109 packs a 9-inch HD display and Tegra 3 for $299 – available today

Lenovo IdeaPad A2109 packs a 9-inch HD display and Tegra 3 for $299 – available today

Lenovo has a brand new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet on the block today that might be worth taking a second look at. It’s called the IdeaPad A2109 (not to be confused with the S2109) and is a pretty great package all for $299. This might not dethrone the Nexus 7, but those wanting a larger screen with similar specs should take note.

The IdeaPad A2109 comes with a 9-inch 1280 x 800 resolution HD display, the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage all for only $299. That is as close as the Nexus 7 price you’re going to get (for now) that also has the Tegra 3 under the hood. It doesn’t have Android 4.1 Jelly Bean but you’ll be speeding along with 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich for now.
What makes this tablet even more exciting is the fact that it has a few other specs the Nexus 7 is missing. Those include micro-HDMI out, micro-SD for extra storage, and two cameras. Yup, you’ll get a 3 megapixel rear and 1.3 VGA front camera with this tablet from Lenovo.
We haven’t heard much regarding this tablet but aren’t sure why, as this is a fairly attractive package. Lenovo also has a very similar device in the 7-inch form factor, the A2107, that we’d love to compare with the Nexus 7. Sadly there’s no word on the smaller sibling. For those interested in this Lenovo IdeaPad A2109 9-inch quad-core tablet you can get it today — right this minute. It is available both online and in-store at Best Buy for just $299.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 specs leaked early, Jelly Bean included

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 specs leaked early, Jelly Bean included

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2 phablet is just a few short days from getting officially announced and unveiled to the world, but now a Korean newspaper might have spoiled a few more details a bit early. The Galaxy Note 2 model GT-N7100 (first note was N7000) will rock all the specs we’ve been hearing rumors about for the past few weeks, but this leak allegedly confirms Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean on board.

With all the talk of Samsung getting Jelly Bean ready for the Galaxy S III, also releasing the new flagship Galaxy Note 2 with Android 4.1 seemed logical but you never know these days. The specs leaked today seemingly confirm Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, the 5.5-inch 1280 x 720p display — an HD Super AMOLED — then just as expected an 8 megapixel camera, 16/32GB storage options, as well as both 3G and 4G LTE models.
Then as you can see above the Samsung Exynos 4 Quad 4412 1.4 GHz quad-core processor is on board, just as expected. While nothing has been technically confirmed we’ve been hearing rumors and seeing leaks with this type of information for over a month, this just comes from a more reliable source.
So far it appears that Samsung will be blending the specs of their Galaxy S III with the previous generation and first Note for an impressive handset. If they’ve managed to keep the size the same, or make it thinner, while also improving on the battery we’ll have a real winner here. The previous Note sold far more than many expected — so we’re excited to see the all new Galaxy Note 2.
IFA 2012 starts this week in Berlin, Germany, and we’ll be on the ground capturing all the details as Samsung lets them out so stay tuned right here at Android Community.

LG Optimus G quad-core pictured in the flesh, TrueHD IPS+ display confirmed

LG Optimus G quad-core pictured in the flesh, TrueHD IPS+ display confirmed

The latest and greatest in smartphones is almost here. Earlier this week we reported on a new device codenamed the LG Optimus G with a quad-core processor, and later Qualcomm confirmed the details. LG’s new powerhouse will feature the brand new Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, and that is only the beginning. Today we got our first official look at the phone, as well as more details from LG.

Thanks to the folks at AndroidMX we are seeing the new Optimus G pictured for the first time. Their images confirm the awesome display, as well as the internals with a few screenshots confirming the specs. Those are a 4.7-inch 1280 x 800 resolution display with LG’s brand new TrueHD IPS+ technology. This is said to be 60% brighter than Samsung’s AMOLED, while being more efficient too.

That isn’t all either. They managed some screenshots of the new LG Optimus G running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, and can also confirm the 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and the Adreno 320 for stunning graphics and gaming. Oh and did we mention they confirmed the 13 megapixel camera — yea that happened.
Earlier today we also received some more confirmation from LG Korea. They confirmed the retina beating, Samsung topping display they’ll be using, as well as a new battery technology they claim will make the phone up to 60% more efficient. Whether we’ll be getting 60% more battery life is another story though. Either way the details confirmed by LG as well as the leaks from yesterday all makes for a strong showing from LG.
The impressive new next-gen LG Optimus G is headed to the streets internationally in September, with a mid October launch date stateside. Stay tuned for more details as we’ll be seeing it live next week at IFA 2012.

NASA PhoneSat sending Nexus One, Nexus S into space

NASA PhoneSat sending Nexus One, Nexus S into space

It’s been a big summer for NASA. A few weeks back, it landed the Curiosity rover on the surface Mars, and it announced earlier this week that we’ll be going back to Mars in 2016 – this time to find out how the Red Planet evolved. But NASA’s upcoming plans don’t all have something to do with Mars as some of them, like PhoneSat, will be playing out much closer to home.

According to PC World, the goal of PhoneSat is to incorporate consumer devices into nanosatellites. The PhoneSat team has actually been working on this project for a number of years, but now it’s nearly time to launch the mission. At some point later this year, NASA PhoneSat will be launching satellites powered by the Nexus One and the Nexus S into space.
The Nexus One will be featured in PhoneSat 1.0, which understandably won’t be packing much power. That’s okay though, because with the two PhoneSat 1.0 satellites that go up, NASA is hoping to see if these phones can even operated in space. The Nexus One will be enclosed in a 10-by-10-by-10 centimeter square cube, with additional external batteries to keep the phone running and an external radio beacon that will communicate with the NASA team on Earth.
PhoneSat 2.0 will be a little more advanced than PhoneSat 1.0 (as if the name didn’t already give that away), as this satellite will feature a Nexus S. This one comes equipped with solar arrays and a GPS, however, which will allow PhoneSat 2.0 to stay operational in space longer. Two PhoneSat 1.0s and one PhoneSat 2.0 will be launching into space later this year, strapped to Orbital Sciences Corporation’s new Antares rocket.
This all sounds pretty nuts, but you want to know what’s even more nuts? If this works, we’ll have a much cheaper way of putting satellites in space, as NASA says that it didn’t have develop any new technology for these launches and that each satellite only costs $3,500 to produce. This is a pretty exciting time to be a space junkie, so keep an ear to Android Community, since we’ll have that launch date once NASA solidifies it!

Samsung found guilty across the board – fined over 1 billion dollars

Samsung found guilty across the board – fined over 1 billion dollars

Things surely aren’t looking good for Samsung right about now. As I’m sure you’re all aware the lawsuit between Samsung and Apple is currently going through the final verdict stages. After a 3 week lawsuit and hours of deliberation the jury has found Samsung “guilty” for all 21 phones brought forward, but not on the Galaxy Tab line. More details below.

Tough break kid. The jury has ruled that Samsung infringed on multiple Apple patents for almost all of their devices starting with the original Samsung Galaxy devices like the Vibrant, the Nexus S, and multiple other phones. What makes this worse is everything Samsung brought forward was denied. The Jury has stated that nothing from Apple infringed Samsung’s Utility patents — nothing. Here’s some of the breakdown.
All of the devices listed were found to be infringing upon claim 19 of 301 patent including SEC, SEA, and STA: Galaxy Tab Wi-fi (SEA), Captivate (STA), Continuum, Droid Charge, Exhibit 4G, Galasy Ace, Prevail, S 4G, S II, Galaxy Tab, The Gem, Indulge, Infuse 4G, Mesmerie, Nexus S 4G, Replenish and Vibrant.
For claim Two, Samsung devices were also found to infringe for SEC: For SEC Captivate, continuum, droid charge, fascinate, Galaxy Prevail, Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S II, i9100, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Tab, Tab 10.1, Gem, Indulge, Infuse, Nexus S 4G. That’s for Claim 8 of 915 patent. For SEA there was infringement on the part of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and for STA infringement on the part of the Captivate, Continuum, Droid Charge, Exhibit, Prevail, Galaxy S 4G, S II AT&T, SII T Mobile, Galaxy Tab, Gem, Indulge, Infuse 4G, Mesmerize, Nexus S 4G, Transform and Vibrant.
The problem here is Samsung was also found guilty for willfully knowing they were infringing patents. They also were found guilty for basically tarnishing the image of the iPhone. We are still digging through all the details, not to mention I’m no patent lawyer, but things are looking very very bad for Samsung.
So far from reports at The Verge Samsung is required to pay Apple damages to the tune of $1,051,850,000. I’ll help you out: that is 1 billion, 51 million and 855,000 thousand dollars. Apple damages payable to Samsung: Zero. Stay tuned as we’ll update when we hear more.

Apple vs Samsung verdict reached – expect appeals

Apple vs Samsung verdict reached – expect appeals

By now I’m sure you’re all aware of the Apple vs Samsung patent lawsuits trials that have been going on for far too long. Today however after 3 days of deliberating we will finally know the fate of both companies. According to CNET a verdict has been reached by the jury, and we are just awaiting the damaging details.

This multi-million, if not billion dollar lawsuit has been going on for weeks and weeks, with both sides presenting their side of the case. We’ve seen plenty of back and forth but eventually just wanted to wait it out as these lawsuits have been nothing but frustrating for all parties involved. That means Apple, Samsung, the courts, and of course consumers.
There is potentially tons at stake here. From millions if not billions of dollars in settlement fees, to the ban of potentially multiple Samsung smartphones and tablets. The same can be said about Apple as Samsung brought a pretty good case against them too. A Korean court today ruled in neither parties favor, and required them both to pay fines as well as banned multiple devices from both sides in the country.
So far we don’t have the actual verdict, as the courts are still sifting through all the details. According toThe Verge Samsung has requested an additional 30 minutes to look over the verdict, and the Judge is doing the same. Basically this entire drawn out and ridiculous set of lawsuits is almost over — only it isn’t. No matter what the outcome we will most certainly see an appeal from one side, if not both.
Update: So far Samsung has been found guilty of infringement on multiple levels, for a good 19 different smartphones and the Galaxy Tab 10. Things aren’t looking good but we are still waiting to hear all the details.

Samsung Galaxy Stellar heads to Verizon for $99

Samsung Galaxy Stellar heads to Verizon for $99

A new smartphone from the folks at Samsung is prepared to grace the Verizon Wireless network. It’s called the Samsung Galaxy Stellar and we don’t know much about it. Today some new details have been unearthed about this budget phone showing that it will hit Verizon soon for the low low price of just $99 dollars.

The above screenshot was gathered by Droid-Life and all it does is leave us asking questions. Back in March Samsung trademarked the Galaxy Stellar name, and now we’re about to find out more details on this mystery handset.
Obviously this will be some type of mid-range device considering Verizon will be asking $99 for the phone, but the odd part about this leak is the inclusion of Amazon Android apps and the “starter mode.” It clearly lists users being entertained by Amazon Apps, which leads us to think it will have their app store rather than Google’s. Why anyone would want only that options beats me, but Verizon and Samsung might know something we don’t.
Maybe this will be a near top end device only without the Google Play Store thus explaining the lower price point — but who knows. That also could just be an odd way of saying it will also come pre-loaded with Amazon’s options. It looks like the online retail giant either paid Verizon or Samsung a good sum of money. We should be hearing more soon as this device is set to hit the market for just $99.

Jelly Bean hits the ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 in the UK

Jelly Bean hits the ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 in the UK

The folks from ASUS quietly started pushing out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to their popular quad-coreTransformer Pad TF300 this weekend. The update started arriving for those across the US but today another region is being graced with the highly anticipated update. ASUS is now rolling it out across the UK.

Those across the pond are now starting to receive the update right on their tablets, and it should be available as we speak. This was reported earlier, but this morning ASUS UK Facebook confirmed the update with the snazzy photo you see above. Who’s ready for those tasty Jelly Beans?
You’ll want to reach for the butter popcorn flavor, because Jelly Bean and project butter is extremely smooth and stable. ASUS was expected to be one of the first to Jelly Bean and these latest updates are right on time.
ASUS was nice enough to tell everyone “enjoy your first taste of Jelly Beans on a big screen!” And trust me, we are. As usual the update should arrive over the air right on the tablet. Or head into settings and check for updates manually if you don’t want to wait. We can expect further updates and announcements for the Transformer Prime, Infinity, and hopefully the original all coming soon.
